But seriously, this is going to be a weird race - a championship race, so it will go out slow. At altitude so it will go out slow. Rupp is a clear underdog but running well...
I can see a great, unevenly paced race with Lagat running a 26 last 200 and winning by 5 meters. But if it is really slow and surgy, which it probably will be - anything can happen.

Though I think it's unlikely for Rupp to beat Lagat, I don't think it's going to be as big of blow out as everyone is anticipating.
Yes, Lagat is very fit, as indicated by his 8:10 2Mile. However, Rupps 13:11 is not exactly walking. I think that Lagat will win, but it will be by less than one second.
Farah separated himself quite easily from Rupp, in the last 200m of that 5k. Obviously Lagat has a lot more speed than Farah. With that in mind, Rupps best chance at beating Lagat, would be for him to go out at 7:30 pace and hope that his 10k strength will be enough to hold off Lagat.
Look for Vaughn to lead early, Rupp to take over, Lagat to outkick those two...then Dunbar sneaks by and surprises everyone for the win!
He needs to hope that the pace isn't too hot, and just do an extended kick from 700m to go like Lee Emmanuel at the NCAA indoor mile last year. Rupp can't run away from Lagat from the gun, and he can't beat him in a kick if he waits until the very end, but maybe he can get a nice jump on him from 700m out and hang on for the W.
I don't think Lee Emanuel was head and shoulders above the field at NCAAs last year since there were seasonal bests close to his, but he made it look like easy when he got a jump on the field and and no one responded. Maybe he was that much better though, at least on that day, which would make this strategy worthless for Rupp.

Hate to break to everybody but Rupp has no chance in hell of beating a healthy fit Lagat. Not hating on Rupp, just stating the obvious.
Rupp can definly beat lagat considering his 5k record. He would have to drop a 4 flat with a mile to go. Lagat is a follower and cannot run alone so he'll be trailing the first mile or so. And galen will suprise him.

Sorry I must have missed your post.
A 2:30 last k would be very hard for him to do. I think you are right about kicking at 1k to go because if he waits until 700m the pace would probably have picked up already.
I hope he tries a strategy like this, and the pace is slow enough. It would be way more fun to watch than if he just sits on Lagat and waits to get blasted over the last 300m. It probably won't work, but I think it's his best shot aside from the Tanya Harding strategy.
Pray... that is about it.

Are you serial?. Remember when Bekele broke the 5000 WR in 2004 and EL G still beat him. Fast times don't mean much in tactical races. Besides Rupps 5k record is only like a tenth of a second faster than Lagats (hardly an indication that Rupp can beat him). Also Lagats last 300m of his american 5k indoor record was hell of a lot faster than Rupp in which he was outkicked by Farah. Rupp is a good runner and he'll continue to improve but he's overrated. Yep I said it . Now bash away fanboys.

I agree with this. Yes, Lagat is consistent and he's the better runner, not to mention that the distance is more toward his strength than Rupp's. Still, at Lagat's age, there will come a point where Rupp will start beating him. Maybe not this year, and maybe at 5,000 rather than 3,000.
