Part of our xc team (Bowdoin) and a group of local runners ran in two of these relays on Orono's (ME) indoor track in the early 80s. The event raised $$ for the American Cancer Society and was organized by one of the frats (FIJI) at UMaine, held late in February, I think. The first year, we began with 8 and ended with 6, each running 36 miles, and finished behind a team of runners from Orono and the local high school, Brewster. The only thing that kept us going was M. Jackson's Thriller, which came out that year and was blasting in the track every time you got out there.
The next year, we kept a full team of 10 all the way through, making it much easier, and ran 278 or 280 total. Our best guy was Lance "Shipbuilder" Guiliani (worked at Bath Iron Works), around a 5:00 average. With the drive up and back, it was 40+ hours with not a minute of sleep. A real test, but unforgettable experiences and worth it.
