You may have long since ignored this post, but I'd like to reply in case others are looking into the same question.

Like you, I love wine. Also like you, I find it easy to drink a bottle over the course of an entire evening. I don't do it every night, but I'd like to!

The problem with drinking every night is diseases like cirrhosis of the liver. You can otherwise be extremely healthy, but if you're exposing your liver to alcohol constantly, you are asking it to work extremely hard. A liver that battles toxins daily is more likely to develop cirrhosis, which is a painful condition that can be fatal.

A good friend of mine lost her mother to liver disease. Her mother was never drunk. She was a classy lady who looked you in the eye and spoke intelligently. Unfortunately, it was discovered that she had been nursing drinks over long periods of time in a day. This sounds a lot like you and me.

So, I completely understand why you feel like your habit isn't harmful. I'd feel the same way if it weren't for what I know about liver disease. That happens to be MY reason for cutting back.

I drink beer, wine or vodka depending on the setting. More than most people would say is healthy. If I'm engaged in an activity of some kind I done miss alcohol at all. During the day I dont crave drinks. At night if I'm bored I'll drink, whether that be with somebody else or alone. Maybe I'm an alcoholic, I don't know.

What I do know is that it isn't good for your liver. If your liver is working too hard, your running won't suffer as a result. However, drinking is also hard on your heart, and prevents it from working as efficiently as it could otherwise. Most runners don't realize this.

Based on this thread I am addicted to running - I cannot go a week, let alone a month without running. I can, however, go 1-2 days without drinking wine, but I still think about it helping me to relax, etc.

I do the same thing, but with scotch. Usually 2 or 3 "drinks" a night but I'm certain my pour is stronger than what the government considers a drink. So likely more like 5 or 6. I have taken breaks, but I miss it. I like the taste and how it makes me feel.

If you regularly drink a bottle of wine then your liver gets accustomed to handling it.

There are addicts that take 90 Percodan in a day and LIVE! How? Because they've been taking a boatload of Percodan for a long time.

Get your average Hobby Jogger out to run a hard ten mile run in 80 degree weather and you'll get some deaths.

I see nothing wrong with a bottle of wine a day if it's done on a regular basis, without binging or increasing the dose and the drinker isn't overweight.

I think it hurts your body more to quit cold turkey, then binge, then quit, then binge...

Same thing with running. It's those runners that get hurt, then stop, then get hurt, that aren't doing their bodies any favors.

My partner is the same was. Starts sippung at 5pm until he goes to bed. Most nights it is a bottle. I am not worried he is an alcoholic as he has stopped in the past for weeks at a time twice just to see how it would affect him and it didn't but i am worried about his liver, though he gets his liver enzymes tested often due to taking psoriasis medications.

750ml on "most" nights is definitely too much alcohol unless you're a healthy 600lb male. I bet you are waking from deep sleep around 3:30pm. I bet you can't go 60 days without it. I bet around 8:00pm you're really feeling the need to hold your favorite wine glass.

The OP is likely long gone. However, he/she reminded me a lot of myself. I think he/she "secretly" thinks he/she had a drinking problem, but isn't ready to come to terms with it.

My response would be the same as would be to those people who quote articles about how running too much is detrimental to your health. So what? I would rather do the things I enjoy in life and live a few less years then not do those things. A bottle may be a bit much, but if you enjoy it and it isn't causing major issues in your life, then who cares. While there is a chance that it could escalate to heavier drinking which could then become a problem, it is more than likely that you would go on the rest of your life simply enjoying your bottle.

keep it up. 6 hours is a long time. i wouldn't worry about it as long as you're not drunk, not hungover, and you don't care about the calories. here's what won't happen to you:

you won't die young

you won't get cirrhosis

you won't feel lethargic

you won't become an alcoholic

you won't drink other unhealthy drinks

but you will feel relaxed!

overall, red wine is pretty healthy. i drink a lot of it, too, so i might be biased! although not as much as you do.

What a light weight! I've been doing one bottle plus (two buck chuck) for over 15 years. Sixty-one years old. Just a tick over 20:00 5 k's. Guess the 'ol Liver has grown accustomed to "such a load". Honestly, though...if I were younger, and gave a REAL crapola about my running and my times, I'd for sure cut back, at least a little bit.
