tpcb,
It's a wonderfully valid observation how valuable simple walking can be. .
AM. 12 miles, around 90 minutes. 2 deer and much scurrying in the roadside brush. Grouse, chipmunks, squirrels, etc.
We leave for Chicago at 6AM tommorow.
My 58 yo head throbs with all the social aplomb of a 5 year old pulling open the candy store door. I can't wait to get there.
driske,
sometimes i have this feeling that in my adolescence i was thinking about a d or v-jay of sorts.
Thinking about a 5-y-o in a windy city i dont know why but the concept of Breaking Away came to mind, then then the movie came to mind. And again the soundtrack of a training sequence came to mind. In the movie my countrymen were anything but supportive. Here's to you.

today AM: walk to school, was late so broke into "gliders" - walk, walk faster, run, skip on the manholes, slowdown gradually, keep fastwalk, glide on the downhill, grab a hand on the uphill, sprintdownhill again, walk, ect ect - every once in a while. Kids have a wonderful way of self-regulating. We should re-learn from them on occasion.
lunchtime today: day off, hit the beach in Santa Severa. 1h24 barefoot on soft sand. swim bliss recovery.
correcting previous post: "i was thinking about BEING a d or v-jay of sorts"
Hope I'm not intruding on your thread when I post here. Up at 4:30 a.m. for a target 70 km run. 42 km in 3:51:31 with the first 21 km with my wife at a slower pace, then 4 x 800 on hills (3:13-2:55-2:44-2:35), then 25 km building up from 5:20/km to 4:40/km averaging 4:45 for the last 5 km. Total distance: 71 km, total time: 6:11:23, for an average of 5:14/km. Four weeks to go.
The more the merrier Brett. Great stuff, what sort of target are you looking at for the 100km?
No running for me the last 2 days. I hurt something in the groin, upper hammie region toward the end of the season and have had ongoing niggles since. It's ok running uphill but bothers me when I stretch out on the flat. Thursday I did a 6.5km loop and had planned to do 2 laps in an hour but pulled the pin early in 2d lap. I went into town and ran 6 x up the lookout steps as this doesn't bother it.
Yesterday was a zero, no bike, no kyak, no run.
Today, after 8hrs working on the shovel I did a strong mtn bike ride up to the top of Mt Ida and back. Surprised myself, up in 39 and total of 65m. That's pretty quick for me on this course, best the last couple of years is 37/62. I have been pretty slack on the bike training so I'm not sure where that form came from.
Maybe at 50 I need to adhere to the less is more principle!!
As always on this course I had several close wallaby and roo encounters. The ferals were also out in force with a herd of goats roaming the summit and a fox that nearly got skittled by a bike travelling 55kph.
Brett, another way of echoing mopak might be to say it is impossible to intrude on your own shareable thoughts. Wow, what a workout and you were done just in time for brunch. What do you eat after that kind of workout?
today: kids athletics, kids were split into regular groups but there were a few renegades here and there and we had to make our very own rebel team... One hour non stop.
was able to get out with the team yesterday.....41' at a pretty good pace (for me).....felt good after 4 days off.....good thing the (long) weekend is here so I can get another run in.....then should be able to do something with the gang on Tuesday.....this could be the start of something big....
Thanks. I had a hard time eating anything afterward. An hour or so later I could eat a banana, then some soup and pudding, then some pretzels and a donut, then about six hours later after taking a nap I had two burgers with fries.
I'm hoping to break 8 hours in the race. Ideally considerably faster than this, but that's my minimum goal.
15k tempo in just over 56 minutes.
10k XC race next weekend.
8k XC race last weekend...28:1*
A 2hr run,up and down Mt Alexander via the Great Divide Trail, a hard 35 up and easy 28 down. Then up via the road in a quick 29 and easy down via untracked scrub in 28. Very scenic run back at the end, straight through the huge granite buttresses.
today: 2h plus in Villa Pamphili in my vibrams including 12x100m striders at the end. Lovely post-rain soft grass and trails. Methinks one mental approach to reliably do fibre-preserving striders, is to include them in the distance/time session as opposed to think of them as something to do at "the end" of the workout. Felt wholesome.
Rather than doing the same 5k loop several times, as i was tempted (to think less) when i set off, i did two loops and then kept on expanding towards the perimeter wall. So I kept of thinking to run more rather than run less. Good head space. On the final 2k or so, FabioB one of the villa masters i hold in high esteem, pulled up along side and made me understand that my pace and form were ok.
No animals, just runners.
Wishing for driske to be satisfied.
AM: wake up at six, some errands, including taking car to the mechainic, walk back home, produce shopping, bike to school, bike commute to work.
Just a paddle on a very choppy lake for an hour in the early afternoon. Waiting for the Driske report with baited breath.
yesterday PM: more running errands, some exercises at home.
today AM: Walk to school, bike commute.
-508 days to The MOARG (The Mother Of All Running Gatherings) in Gimmelwald, Switzerland, in 2011.
a lethargic 40' ish on Sunday....tired legs from Friday's faster (than usual) jaunt and spending mucho time on my feet Saturday.....went for a walk yesterday.....hoping to get something done today with the team.....
PM: 1h10 in villa pamphili, 20mins wu, 24xrow of pinetrees uphill and downhill, 4xround the campone in 2:08 or so, cool down, chin up bar.
Back from the Windy City intact. My pride is a bit tarnished, but who am I trying to kid anymore. Like it or not I've slowed down.
3:38:24 chip time on splits of 1:50;50 and 1:47:34.
The most fitting t-shirt at the expo stated "The older I get, the faster I was"
Good time had by all. Cramps managed to keep my 44YO bro-in-law 10 mins. back so at least I don't have that feedback to deal with for the next year.
3 miles walked on Monday
Biked 5 miles. Legs still not interested in running today.

driske, you ran a negative split. the t-shirt's got me laughing. i should be wearing a "the older i get the more i have to learn" model. you can tell that your bro-in-law: what's the ratio: about 20-25 secs for every year of your seniority?
Words and groups of words i focussed on were:
intact
kid
Good time had by all
interested
and of course,
today
AM: walk/glide to school with kids, handpushing the bicycle, temps have gone chilly, makes for some brrr humor and realizations like: " Dad, running to school ' e' fico ' (is cool) because you stay warm and we are not late."
Then bike commute.
PS. btw, got a bib for New York, so these chilly temps are good acclimatizing
