Well, I was really hoping for a breakthrough today, but, it did not come. However, despite the whining that follows, I'm very happy that I did the event, and this one was truly special, in terms of attendance (230+) and Cam Levins winning time.
I didn't feel great on the warmup....1700m jog from home to the start, got my sticker, 1700m jog back, water, washroom, 1700m jog down, a few strides......dammit my legs felt stale.
After the initial mayhem at the start, I settled into a rythm, but it didn't feel smooth at all. Doc was ahead of me as I hit the tracks in 72...a time that I had planned on. I soon overtook Doc, but I knew I wasn't running well. At Extreme (1000m) in 3:04 (I had hoped for 3:00), I felt tired and lifeless.
I just held onto my not very invigorating form to the end....when Doc surged by me before Cliffe, I could not respond. "I'm sure I'll see Keith next" I thought. (I didn't.)
I hit the line in 4:53, spent, dead.....I'm done! Stick a fork in me. I have my theories about why I was so much slower this year, but now it's time to plan for next year....do some things differently.....don't get injured all winter again!!!
I waited for the times to go on the results board, and someone began writing a "3" beside Cam's name. WOW! 3:59. Phenominal.
I was 8th.....it was good to see Mark Cryderman finally out for this event....he was second in 4:19. I know Robin Poirier, Chris Barth and Neil Holm were all up there too.....as well as Doc and Cam's younger brother.....I think that accounts for all who were ahead of me.
I'm sure I'll have some more things to say about this race soon, but for now, my thinking is, wipe the slate clean, tomorrow is Day 1, 2009 was definitely an off year for me for whatever reason, move on, move forward, get back to near 4:42 (my 2008 time) in 2010......but, JUST DO IT ANYWAY!!! (Hopefully with less whining next year.)
