Last night I did a 5000m Allcomers meet "tempo". I thought some 16:40-17:30 poeple were going to be in my "Open" heat, but when we lined up at 7pm, they weren't there, because they switched to the "Elite" heat later on. But, it didn't matter.
We began, and I settled into 3rd, just cruisin, not worrying at all about "pace", just wanting to have fun, do a good tempo, and experience an "Event".....something I have not done in a while. The weather was perfect, my Zooms felt awesome, I was so happy to be over my winter issues, so happy to see and chat with some old friends.....this was just like the old days of evening track meets.....(in slow motion though. Hahaha....)
First lap 86 and it felt like a jog. Second lap 91. This WAS a jog. Shortly after 1000m in 3:40, the first 2 guys moved to lane 2. I guess it was my turn to lead. I did, thru 2k in 7:20, then I sped up some. After 3k in 10:52 (a 3:32km!), I moved to lane 2, and my competitor took the lead through 4k.
I cannot emphasize enough how easy this felt. This was about the same pace as the Feb 1st and Mar 1st 1 Mile trials, where I was STRUGGLING.
At 4k in 14:35 (last km in 3:43) I did some math. "If I run hard for the last km, I can break 18mins." I took the lead with 900m to go and pushed the pace a bit. At 800m to go, I pushed more. At 600m to go, I pushed more. At 400m to go, I pushed more. At 200m to go, I pushed more. I was shocked to find that I had so much fitness, so many gears.
My last 1000m was 3:23, last 400m was 75, and the last 200m was 35!!! I ran HARD on the last 200m, finishing in 17:58. My competitor was 18:04ish. Last place in the Elite men's was probably sub 17:30, so this was the right heat for me, ....today! I know that I can "race" well under 17:30 now. I have come such a long way in the last 2 months.
