By your metric of wins improved:
Russell's rookie year his team improved by 5 wins (adding Heinsohn as well ... nice drafting!!)
Wilt's rookie year his team improved by 17 wins.
As for fan ratings of players, ask NY fans what they think of Jeter or DiMaggio. Sure the numbers weren't there, but they're winners, right?

When Wilt joined the Phila Warriors, he led them in minutes played immediately. That was a 32-40 team. When Russell joined the Celtics, they were already a 39-33 East Conf. Semi-Finalist. Russell as a rookie was still just 5th in minutes played. (Heinson was 4th).
Of the top 7 'minutes played' Celtics, 3 were different in Russell's rookie year (switch out McCauley, Risen & Barret for Heinson, Russell & Phillip)...
Of the top 7 'minutes played' Warriors, only 1 was different in Chamberlain's rookie year (switch out George for Chamberlain).
The new Celtics went from 39-33 to 44-28.
The new Warriors went from 32-40 to 49-26. Credit Wilt with a more impactful rookie year than Russell, it seems---though did the Celtics win the NBA Title in Russell's rookie year? Still, it's tougher to flesh out Russell's impact in that year because Heinson was also new----and actually played more minutes.
Good observation either way by you, sir.
As for Jeter and Joe D, Jeter has been enduring professionalism and productivity at SS. I'm not a Yankee fan, but he plays the game 'the right way'. Joe D.? His career numbers aren't gargantuan, but he played in THE wrong stadium as a right handed hitter. He was a .325? career hitter and as graceful a fielder as there was. Effortless. I thought his numbers were pretty good for his time and limited career (13? years).
I'd take them both on my team. And I hate to admit that.
