A busy weekend for me.
Saturday, a club race in Junortoun/ Wellsford forest near Bendigo. Went out for an hour's ride through the forest beforehand. Then a 2k warmup on the course. 4k handicap trail race. Uphill for 900m, downhill for 1100m, turnaround and retrace your steps. Rough footing.
The guy immediately ahead of ne overshot a turn and I called him back and slowed for him to catch up. The bugger outsprinted me over the last 40m for 3d spot, I told him I won't call him back the next time lol!
Had a quick swig of "MOTHER" (energy drink) and backed up in the 2k handicap. This one is 900m up 100m down 100m up and 900m down. First 500m was pretty rough, legs still shot. Gradually into it and the last 500m was a testing battle and finally an explosive (by my shuffling standards) sprint to pick up 5th spot.
Finished with a gentle 2k jog.
Saturday night was the big social occassion of our little town's year. In bed by 3am.
Sunday morning my other club had it's season opener over 5k.
Did a 2k warmup jog with my son and a few pretty ordinary striders -legs a bit tight.
This is also a handicap race. Hit a good rhythm early and reached 3k in a good time. Laboured through the last 2k and lost some time but got up for 6th place with a well timed lunge for the line. My km average was identical to saturday's 2 races.
Very pleased to turn around to see my son come in just behind me . He ran a 90sec pb. Not bad for a kid who doesn't "train". He is very fit, hikes/runs through the bush, lots of pushups, bike, punching bag, grappling etc but does no specific run training.
He was very pumped although he nearly left his breakfast at the finish line.
