it just seems like a waste, but i mean i see what your saying, and i can only imagine how amazing it was those last 4 laps. still i like faster times, but whatever.

The last lap was crazy but it pissed everyone off so bad when they were running the first 800 in 233.
Jefferson said after the race that he was expecting it to go out in 2:08. His plan all along was to bust out a big final 600.
Going out in :75 or :77 is silly. That is too slow for a 5k or a 10k for these guys. It seems like the finishing order went according to form, but I bet Willis is kicking himself and thinking he would have had more control over the situation if they were at 3:10 at the 1200m instead of 3:30+.
The problem is that when it is that slow everybody is in contention until very late and you have to make sure you are near the front and that wastes energy. For guys at this level if it goes 60-64 the first three 400's then you know who is having an easy time at that pace and who is red-lining. The top-four would have had an easy time of it at 63-64-64 and kicked off of that at 55 or whatever they could muster.
I personally don't care what they run as it affects me not at all. But I would question the logic of running 30 seconds slower than your best at any level for a miler.
I heard about this race while working the Women's Big 10 meet in Ann Arbor (won by the UMich women, Lindsey Gallo triple winning mile, 3k, 5k).
Those who would have some problem w/the final times are going to have to live with it cause they aint' runnin' it over cause you're unhappy. The guys in the race don't give a rat's ass what the spectators think. All they care about is place. They are not there to please the onlookers or Letsrun experts.
Okay, so maybe I exaggerated a tiny bit by saying I could've won it. I was just trying to illustrate a point, and that point was there was a championship mile yesterday that included Nick Willis and the Jefferson duo, and the WINNING time was 4:26...
does anyone know where i could find video footage of this race? I would love to see this... well the last 800 at least. so tactical, so much tension.
I didnt believe the results when I first saw them... Willis with a 4:26?? thats crazy.
Have you guys ever had to triple in a big meet? Most of these guys had at least one race behind them, and one more in front of them. The fewer hard laps you run, the easier it is to get through the weekend.
no one wants to take that race out cause the chances of them winning is very slim. everyones just going to sit on them.
When there are four guys that can kick like mad, who is going to take the lead and perish, Ben Gregory? Mike Woods? Some guy from Minnesota? Willis won't lead that cause he doesn't want to do the work for a 3:56 guy a 3:57 guy and Spiker. The same logic follows for why the other three wouldn't lead. Spiker made a big move at 800 but didn't maintain it. SJ blasted at 600 to go and was all out. Willis and JJ went with SJ. At 200 to go, Willis easily moved by SJ, gapped about 7-8 meters, but then stopped pulling away. SJ found a gear around the last turn and caught Willis at the line. JJ found a gear coming out of the last turn and caught Spiker. Willis commented that he has only been doing tempos so far. SJ and JJ said they haven't done anything to prepare them for a 1:20-1:21 last 600. Spiker looked like a great kicker with nothing else to do but watch. JJ said he wanted to drop out at the 77s 400 because it was stupid and no one wanted to take it. It was interesting watching everyone flying around a very tight Purdue indoor track. Great tuneups for NCAAs.

I would say slim chance for a video. Purdues track may be the worst spectator track in the world, you'd only see 100 meters of the race.
Maybe the Daktronics video was recorded? Im not sure. I didn't think the last 800 was all that exciting. Just the final 200, particularly the last 60 where Willis and Jefferson were battling and it was up in the fair was very thrilling. It was incredible how Jefferson came back because Willis looked so in control and was up about 6 meters with 150 to go.
Next year is the year to see whos the real big ten indoor mile champ. All three guys are back, well if willis doesn't go pro. John won the Big Ten indoor mile two years ago over Willis, that race finished about like this years with John catching Willis at the line to win in like 4:05 2:08/1:57. Then last year with John injured Willis and Sean battle, with Willis winning by I think alittle over a one second, i think 4:06 2:12/1:54. Then this year sean winning over both in an insane 4:26 catching Willis at the line 2:33/1:53. Can't wait for next year if it happens. Its all tied up at 1 a piece
I think it's hilarious that the mile went out in a 75 and then it SLOWED DOWN!
Who was leading the first 800?
have you guys never seen a championship race?! you run to win.
If I remember correctly Willis was leading... I dont think he wanted to and thats why I think it went so slow. I think he figured if he just ran really slow someone would take over but they all just chilled with him. The Jeffersons flanked him closely.

I could've won that damn thing.
that's a big N-O, good buddy...
will everyone stop complaining about the mile time already. its funny, just laugh about it. its one of the great things about track. these guys had a lot of races in 2 days with prelims, other events, and relays. their last concern is pleasing people with times and their priority is to get as many points as possible for their team with using the least amount of energy. you'll see many of these guys going balls to the wall next weekend at notre dame's last chance meet and at nationals.
ps. chill!
this definetly beats that 1500 race that sj won while going out in 2:20........4:05 was the finish?
here's the thing: how many of you bitch-ass letrun posters can actually run sub-4, let alone 4:10, or even a 4:24. my money would be that most couldn't. easy to criticize what you can't do, and that's why you'll always be nothing more than letsrun posters (posers and critics).
Maybe next year they should just take all the guys in the mile and have them run 400m all out and pick the winner that way. It's pretty much what happened here.
