the DPT is not a PhD, it is a professional degree, not an academic one. It's similar to a DC (chiropractor). In fact, I heard that is why the graduate is now called a "doctor" - they were losing business to chiros because people would rather see someone with Dr. in front of their name.

This is the 1st response that I've seen about PTA's. I will be retiring from the Gov. after 35 years and would like to pursue a second career as a PTA. I'll be 55 and in great health. I've always had a desire to help people regain movement by being a PT or PTA's. I'm no spring chicken so another 4-7 years in school is not very appealing. Do PTA's make the salary you quoted below straight out of school? How transferable is a PTA from one state to the next? Are there different certifications required for a PTA from state to state?

A large part depends on what setting you work in. Male PTAs can make $55k a year working home health. Then again male PTAs are in high demand for home health.

the higher you can count, the more money you will make in PT.

No PTAs don't make $55k straight out of school. I believe the average starting out is around $30-32k a year. Home health does pays more, but they usually don't hire new grads cause of lack of experience (home health ptas are on there own). Occasionally a home health agency will hire a new grad if you did a clinical with them or your just real good or they need help pretty bad (which is common).
If you want to work in a different state you have to apply to that state to get a new license. You can be licensed in more than 1 state at one time, but then you have to keep up with the different states license regulations (continuing ed., fees)
they used to make an assload until the market got saturated. now, it's 40k a year. go to PA school. you're better off- no doctors hours, you make 100k consistently- cradiothoracic, neurosurg, orthopedics...
