Take the A train to Howard beach, then the AIRTRAIN to JFK. The AIRTRAIN is very nice but a bit expensive (I thin 8 bucks?). Anyway, you can go from anywhere in NYC to JFK for about $10.

this is ridiculous. most conservatives would embrace putting some of the $2.5 trillion of revenue towards the infrastructure. the real problem is that the bulk of our revenue goes towards paying entitlements, which does absolutely nothing for society on the whole. shift some of the entitlement handouts to infrastructure improvements.

taking 1 subway line to the airtrain (which, by the way, is on a different gauge track, which explains why the subway doesn't go to the terminals) is a completely ridiculous way to expect to get large numbers of people to an airport. try doing that from somewhere on the east side with a family and with multiple pieces of luggage. it will take over 2 hours. so, yeah, if you think that that is an acceptable way to use public transportation to get to an airport, then it exists. myself and most everyone else disagrees, which is why its use is minimal at best.
compare jfk's public transportation to the public transportation systems in most other major foreign cities where you take 1 train that delivers you inside your terminal and you might start to understand.

To other posters, Dulles is really easy to navigate if changing planes. Atlanta not too bad. IAH is coming around nicely. Have to agree that most US airports have no real public/mass transit links. Sydney is the same, horrible airport to get to and from, no train, no highway, only city streets.

Fair enough, but you were claiming you would have to take the bus and that is simply not true. I usually just suck it up and take a cab.
But LGA is worse, there you have to take a bus.
And don't get me started on EWR. Man, I hate EWR.
And for the record, once I was flying out of ISP.
