A) It was 8.4, not 8.9.
B) You would not add on a start - the start is the slowest part of the race. The start is already accounted for in his 75m time. You would add on a finish. Then, using your own math, 3.1 would be extremely fast for the first 25m. Which means 3.1 = 25 m, 5.3 = next 50m at peak speed. Then we could assume a 2.6 last 25m slight deceleration.
As Salazar stated, it would be about 11.0.

Seriously, Rupp has taken lots of shots at mid-d events, and his, um, ACTUAL RECENT TIME, of...wait for it...*3:34 high* is pretty much consistent with what he's done (if not faster) compared to the MANY 800/mile/3000/two-mile attempts he's had indoor and outdoors.

He's great. Olympic silver is great, period, no matter what anybody says about 2012 being the least competitive OG 10,000 since 1992. 26:48 is pretty great - just 2% off the world record so kind of like being just 2:10 off the marathon WR or 0.8 off the 400 WR, so really excellent.
But he is not a 3:28 guy, and never will be.

his prelim line of fit that day was
51.8 / 1'48.8 ->

some pointers
- mo ran 12.9 in an actual 100 - even if he was in low-12 shape at peak/top weather, that is still indicative of 50++ & more like 51+, & rupp is at best comparable/slightly worse
- ~ 1/2 dozen guys went 12'46 - 12'50 in paris with winner finishing in a 54 - rupp wouda been up there fighting for places 4 - 6
- his 26'48 wouda been 12'40 - 12'42.5 at even pace - a 5s improvement from that year to london is perfectly possible for a young improving guy

Sorry, but Rupp does not have 49s 400 speed. 51s is a very reasonable estimate.

Regardless, Rupp is not among the top six 10,000 runners in history. Why do you think he is among the top six milers? You really have no idea what 3:28 is, do you?
Rupp might be able to do 3:32, IF dragged by pacers to 1100. In perfect conditions. Likely 3:33-3:34 will be the best he ever posts.

I'm not inflating anything. I know the 1500m and how it should be run by a distance runner. And yes he does have 49 second 400 speed, look at the video, he has a max speed of almost 9 meters per second.
But added to that he has superior speed endurance over long distances. He lacks confidence on the big stage, but it is coming slowly. Look how long it took Mo Farah to gain that confidence.

He can't run 3:28. But he can break 50 - at least on a 4x4.
Salazar said Rupp closed a workout 50.x in preparation for his USOT finish in 52.5. But you would rather believe that someone who closes in 52.5 in a 13:22 race, can only run 51.8 at maximum ability.

Rupp can run 48 for 400m.
