The man is much bigger than his fellow runners. This may have been the reason he withered in the heat. The smaller runners had the advantage.
Dude, there's ONE other runner in the background in that picture. That's hardly evidence to prove your point. In fact, there's an abundance of evidence to the contrary.

And Alberto's never been accused of having "skeleton legs".
Deek was 1.80m or 5' 11", his normal racing weight in the 80s was around the 68kg/150lb mark. His upper body was like that of a 62-63kg runner but those massive tree trunks added to his weight.
Around the 90kg mark these days, he doesn't run many kms any more, more interested in karate.
His brother Louis produces a nice Heathcote Shiraz with grapes grown just up the road from me.
course changed completely from Deeks run in 86. The 86 course for 10k and 25k were brutal.

Case closed? Looks like juma Ikaanga in that pic..who is unusually short.
That was only one picture. Mr. de Castella was dominant before the internet age so there are not too many pictures of him competing. Toshihiko Seko was not a big guy and he competed against Mr. de Castella.

There weren't as many.

The old course was net downhill and very fast!
