To be fair if had the excellent BBC coverage you would soon understand the rules. Before each race they expain it and have former gold medallists explaining the rules and different tactics of the riders
If you lead out the sprint the whole way you would have no chance due to drafting at 40 mph. The race is supposed to be tactical hence the opening laps
If UKA set up was anything like the cycling we might be better at it.

In the past, the US had John Tesh, entertainment reporter announce the women's gymnastics, and for some srange reason, this year we get commentary from Ryan Seachrist from American Idol...
I understand the sprint with it's stalls and jockeying for position, but it has always surprised me you don't see people go for it to get a big jump at the beginning a little more often.

They do it sometimes, but if the other guy reacts quick enough, it's an automatic lose.
