That is 1976 U.S. Olympian and former Rutgers great Mike Roche with number 373 on his bib leading early and finishing fourth in this heat.
Any chance there is video of the US Trials steeple from 1984, 1988, or 1992? I would like to see some video of Marsh or Diemer. Specifically looking for the 1992 Trials, seems like the fastest and closest steeple run in the trials.
Back to the future. Any chance there is a video of the 2012 US Trials mens 5000m heats?
yes, Scarlet. Great to see Mike Roche, who I never really remembered seeing back in those days, until this video. Unfortunately, he had a terrible race in the Final.
The interesting part of this Trials is that every runner knew there would be no Olympic Games for the US, before they toed the line..hard to imagine today.
not often you get to see a guy tear his achilles upclose and personal like that, and watch him try to get up..pretty stark reminder of what happens after age 30 to way too many of us..
Here are the results of that race.Heat 1

It was not too terrible a final in 1980 for Mike - he finished 7th and actually wound up placing 6th due to a disqualification in front of him. I actually was exchanging emails with Miguel the other day and he said he was surprised and happy just to make the finals in 1980 because he had been injured all year.
