Wow you are misinformed. Teachers are not paid during the summer. One can elect to have their paychecks reduced and given over the summer so there is no lapse in income.

There are plenty of teachers here who can answer your question. Oh yeah, I forgot, they are all busy right now preparing for their 2+ month paid vacation. Guess you (and America's children) are out of luck until September.
I don't feel too guilty- I work as a physician serving our nations veterans, and enjoy working in the only single-payer system in the US. I took my initial job despite having offers from the private sector that were between 10 and 20% higher, and have since had my wages frozen for the past 2 years because apparently I, and all the other government employees, did something to the economy. So no, not much guilt, especially since the service I and my colleagues provide is as good or better than the private sector, at a substantially lower cost.
Thanks for providing an honest answer. Also, thank you for doing this important work.
Wait a minute as a teacher I don't have to pay taxes? As always the private screws things up, and to cover their mistakes they look for the easiest target.
I will gladly take a raise if you want though.

The real theft is the taxes that are forcibly confiscated from workers, whether private or public.
I make about 175K per year and do nothing.
say 4 actual hours per week worked.
I think i could make more and still not feel guilty, so i really cant answer the question with great accuracy.
the number is greater than 175K, that is for sure.

Yes, that's it. Taxes equal theft.
Teachers don't a paid 2 month summer vacation.
They get paid for 10 months of work.
God these threads get old.
Where are all of the I hate public sector employee threads when the economy is booming.
Oh that's right no one wants to be a public sector employee in the good times.
Public sector employee here. I DON'T get paid in the summer and I haven't had a pay raise going on 6 years.
The average private sector worker with my education level has done way better than I have over the last five years.
Get over yourselves. If it is such an easy job with great benefits quit your current job and come join us lazy SOBs who make so much money off of stealing money from the tax payers.
Ask the teachers how much they get paid for all the extra work on top of regular school hours. Boom.

A true method of thanks would be to not start threads implying I'm a thief. But, that's asking you to be a thoughtful person, and not just regurgitate right-wing talking points, so it may be asking a lot.

Yes, they do. Amazing to me that folks still respond to this nonsense.
Next time, don't bother.

Glad someone agrees.
Class Advisor: $500/yr. And I got to plan two dances, chaperone them for free, have meetings in my room, hold pep rallys, etc etc etc. I probably worked for about $1 an hour. Easy money!!! (oh, and when another advisor went on leave, I doubled my workload)
Principal's Advisory Group: $300/yr. Two 2-3 hr meetings per month, plus outside of school work presenting school improvement plans and initiatives to staff on a monthly basis! Totally ripped off the taxpayers there. MWahahaha!
Track Coach: $3000. 18 meets, practices (including saturdays and a few sundays). Untold time preppeing sub plans for early release meets, emailing parents, scheduling meetings, banquets, etc etc etc. Totally fleeced the property owners in my district on that one!!!
BOOM!

Are you really that stupid or are you just trying to make us cons look bad?
I work for a public research university and I'm probably overpaid for the work that I do. I could make more in the private sector, but the bennies here are too good.
Is it just me, or is that sort of a loaded question? Anyways, I teach engineering at a community college. Teaching full time through the summer in addition to the school year pulls my income up to $74,000. Because of the missed income while I was getting a PhD in engineering, the value of the service I provide and the thought and effort I put into my job, I'm guessing I could make quite a bit more before I started feeling guilty.

You get paid for all of those. Outside of my regular salary, I only get paid for coaching. The rest is a free service I am required to provide to the county and their kids.
Summer schedule (cc prof):
May 15th - June 15th: rest
June 15th-July 15th: decide what to do with rest of summer
July 15th-August 15th: thumb my nose at FOX news every morning
August 15th - September 1st: rest to ramp up for yet another stressful year
Your answer: a lot
