Hey ESPN quit broadcasting sports that NOBODY CARES about like Soccer, Lacrosse and Skateboarding

I clicked over to ESPN2 this morning and they had a fishing highlights show. Not one where they actually show the guys fishing but highlights showing the best fishing over the past week or so. The fisherman guy is plastered with sponsor advertising just like a nascar driver. Running needs a made for TV event and people sponsored by as many advertisers as they can fit on their body.

I was looking at a British Soccer magazine and the editor asked one of the Premiere league's top player his biggest dislike and he responded by saying "American Football!!"

Everybody in Europe hates American Football with a passion!

If anyone ever scored in soccer, it would be as fun to watch as Lacrosse. It's a great sport to watch, but even more fun to play.

I like sport. I can get in to anything physically competitive. I do question poker on there though.

I agree with the lacrosse thing. I work at a school that has lacrosse and there're about 3 athletes between Varsity and JV. Most of the guys are on drugs and they "excel" at a sport that no one cares about.

Girls? It's worse- they literally can't run. The interest is so high that there aren't enough refs to have all the games they want.

I'm from the Northeast.

Someone once said that lacrosse is the rich, white boy's way of being a good athlete.

I like soccer, but I think there is too much of an American Football vs Soccer thing mostly created by the soccer crowd because they thought they had to compare it to football. (Little man syndrome?)

Putting aside any disagreement with regard to the popularity of soccer, I have to wonder what ESPN would show all day if they never showed sports that "nobody cares about." You can only show events that are happening. The majority of the time, there is not a popular sporting event being contested. If ESPN and ESPN2 only showed hugely popular events, they'd have 40+ hours per day of dead air time between the two channels.

For a country that does not like soccer, we do pretty well. A month ago the US team beat Italy for the first time in a century. Remember, we also beat England in the last world cup. Soccer is the world game. If your nation does not succeed in soccer, you cannot call you country an athletic power. It is really that simply. The superbowl is a hollow victory that means nothing outside America and maybe Canada.

Grow up America, and start embracing soccer.

One of the funniest and most blatant blunders for the promotion of NFL football occurred at Wembley a few years back. I think it was the 49ers over the Broncos, in the last few minutes with no timeouts left, the quarterback began kneeling to run out the clock. Instead of ending the game as a massive promotion of the supposed new world's most popular game, as Americans believe, the fans booed incessantly. They, as I have never appreciated, couldn't believe that supposed "gladiators" can just end a game with minutes left by retreating in the backfield, with nothing the opponent can do but watch. Not a great moment for the NFL's attempt to solidify worldwide appeal. I'd imagine eveyone left joking about how stupid the game is at times, and thinking at least in soccer you can win the ball back if someone takes it into the corner to waste time.

I believe ESPN owns BASS Fishing.

Keep in mind these are from NBC during the middle of the day on Sunday. 800K for Man City at 0900 ET recently on ESPN2--in about 80 million homes on above basic cable packages.

Well, the first two aren't sports, but games. (Nothing wrong with games--they're fun to watch and fun to play, they're just not sports.) And skateboarding isn't a sport, but an activity.

So I'm guessing ESPN was going with the "E" part of its name (Entertainment). Perhaps we'll see more of the "S" part--specifically, The Sport--as summer progresses.

I have been hearing "Lacrosse is the next big sport" since I was in high school and that was 16 years ago.

At a minimum, if you "play" something it's a game and not a sport. You "play" poker and soccer and jacks and golf; they're games. (Again, NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT: I enjoy playing games and watching them.)

Of course, there are some activities that you don't "play" and *still* aren't sports: opera and knitting, etc. Still fun to watch and/or do; just not sports.

I used to always try to defend soccer against these half-brained attacks. Don't really bother to anymore. Soccer is the fastest growing sport in America today. It's #1 in popularity among kids 12 and under - and that's despite the MLS being utter crap. They follow the English, Spanish and Italian leagues + the international competitions.

Are these kids going to switch their attention to baseball and American Football once they're old enough to go to sports bars? Unlikely. In 20 years soccer will be the #1 sport in the US and the team sport with the most active players. Not to mention a proper professional league system.

Until then, have fun bashing soccer as boring and non-physical. You're dinosaurs.

ESPN paid big money for the rights to the European Championships that start in 3 weeks and they're gonna broadcast all matches live. That tournament (every 4 years) used to only be on pay-per-view. Is that proof enough that ESPN doesn't care about soccer?
