I'm just saying how nice it would be if both runners and dog walkers would, as you said, "be considerate." You see, letting a dog run loose without a leash is inconsiderate, and a runner reacting as if every dog owner is a man-killing beast is also inconsiderate. If both sides were "considerate", this whole problem wouldn't exist.

I think being considerate would be following the law. Most places have a leash law.

It's those who choose to ignore that law that are being inconsiderate -- not the runner who doesn't know the temperament of every goddammn dog in the city!

Back when I was a kid, my neighbors had this incredible Saint Bernard with an incredibly fluffy coat. They also owned a couple sports cars and a sailing boat. The boat was nice, but always needed repairs. They would send this fella named Rick Dudley over almost once a month to patch up all the marks they made in the hull of the boat from all the rocks they would bash into when coming into shore. I never understood why they wouldn't just moor the boat off shore and use a dingy, but boy, did they sure have a lot of money!

I don't buy it. Any sailboat that is large enough for a dingy is WAY too big to pull out of the water and bring home. You couldn't haul it because the mast would be too tall to fit under overpasses, signs, power lines, etc.

Quite frankly, you're an idiot for running up behind a doberman, a dog that was bred for personal protection. I'm a doberman owner and know that if you ran up behind my dog, you would've been dealt the same fate. If you're dumb enough to think that coughing as you run up behind someone is enough to get their attention, then you deserve the hand you were dealt. The doberman owner did nothing wrong ... they had the dog on the leash as you stated and were already occupying the sidewalk.

I once bought a new car. Well, it wasn't new, but I just bought it, so it felt new. One door panel had been replaced, so my white car had a red door. It looked like a giant Tylenol.

As I pulled into my driveway, I saw a giant goat in the garage. I thought, "Good Grannies alive, what's that goat doing in here?" It was then that my wife stepped out of the front door and asked what was going on. I said, "There's a goat in the garage!" "A goat in the garage?" "Yeah, a goat in the garage."

Wouldn't you know it, our cat came out of the kitty door. He started going, "Meow, meow, meow!" All crazy like. Then the goat turned its attention to the cat food dish and started chowing down like a horse (well, more like a goat, really). "Meow!" Cat's still going crazy.

I thought about the situation, and decided then and there that if I ever want to PR in the marathon again, I've GOT to increase my mileage!

So, what, people just aren't allowed to pass you while you're walking your dog?

I always keep my dog on the outside of the path/sidewalk so that I'm between him and anyone who is passing me. It's not really that hard to do. He's overly friendly, and I know that not everyone likes dogs, so mostly I just make sure to keep control of him so that he won't slobber on someone who doesn't want anything to do with him. Also, when I'm on a path I know that bicycles will be passing me, so I don't want him to cut off a cyclist when he darts across the path. Further, I recognize that he's an animal and that he might react in a completely unexpected way in some situations. The fact that I have control of my dog means that he will not have the opportunity to annoy or harm anyone.

Why not just keep your Doberman on the opposite side of the trail from where people will be passing? You say yourself that he's bred for personal protection. That being the case, you should maintain control of him.

One of the common defenses of dog owners who don't control their pets is that they're nice dogs, they're just being playful, they're friendly, ect. ect. ect.

I know this comes as a surprise to dog lovers, but not everyone wants to be jumped on, slobbered on, or otherwise greeted by your dog. Some people just aren't "dog people". Out of consideration (ooh, there's that word again) to these people, please keep your dog leashed and under control.

Ain't that the truth. I have nothing against dogs per se, so long as I personally don't have to get too close to them. I'd never own a dog because they're smelly, messy, and slobbery.

This probably sounds really bad, but I actually hate going to my sister's house because she has three large dogs that run wild through the house. They bark at EVERYTHING, they slobber, they beg at the dinner table, they knock everything over...honestly, I don't know how she can stand them. BUT, she NEVER lets them run loose. They are ALWAYS either in the house, in the fenced in back yard, or on a (non-extendable) leash. ALWAYS. She does not subject her neighbors to her little hellions. As for family, well, I guess we get special treatment.

This reads like a troll post, but you never know. I was running in a public wooded park, with trails about 4 feet wide. Like I stated, I coughed, then said "Excuse me" about 10 yards back, even though the dog was already barking at me. I never like to straight up yell "excuse me" because I don't like startling people, so I cough to get their attention, then proceed to speak to them. 10 yards is more then enough warning.

Owner turned around and saw me. She knew I was there and made no effort to move to either side of the trail. So I went into the uncut wooded brush parts off the trail to get around the two. While running around the leashed dog runs into the brush and bites my leg. So of course after all this, it was my fault according to you.
