Attention Gibby: This is the Big Ten

So, Michigan Track and Field is officially a joke. They have a few nice young sprinters, but the middle and distance program, normally its strength, is pathetic. Michigan fires Warhurst for no damn good reason and then hires Gibby who is supposed to be the young, talented, hard working, squeaky clean distance guy to bring back Michigan prestige. Well, I'm sorry, but its been two years and he has not done anything with the talent that he has and I don't see any talent coming in next year. This guy needs to start recruiting some serious talent. I don't doubt he's a good guy and a decent coach, but that ain't gonna get it down in the Big Ten.

If the notes are correct, Forys 8:28 was a Big 10 meet record. Plenty of studs through the years came through the Big 10. Certainly, the quality of competition in the Big 10 this year in the steeple is unbelievable and contributed to the superb times.....and Ron Helmer has to be congratulated for having a tremendous mid and long distance team at Indiana. I know he catches some flak but he's developed a very good team.

Warhurst was a legend but it sounded like some of the aspects of the job weren't that appealing to him anymore. It's tough being a college coach (travel, RECRUITING, coaching some unrealistic and emotional fragile individuals, etc.)

Whether you liked Ron or not he did some great things over his career. Gibby likes to talk a lot of smack about him, which is very disrespectful. Win something first before you trash talk coaches who have.

I don't recall Warhurst winning much of anything in the big ten. at least not in recent years.

Taking HS Forys to now isn't tooo crazy, but that guy was off the face of the earth his first couple years at Michigan. Gibby ressurected him.

Warhurst had a kid during his last few years and his focus shifted.

Forys was not resurrected by Gibby. Forys fell off the face of the earth because he was partying very, very hard.

Forys stopped partying 4 nights a week and starting living like an elite athlete should which is the reason he is back running well, not because Gibby is coaching him.

What exactly is a posting record? I never stated an opinion, just asked a question that still hasn't been answered. Furthermore, opinions don't need to be substantiated or attributed.

What pearls of wisdom did Rojo pick up in a 20 minute conversation that enabled him to a) decide Gibby was a good coach? and b)to end the story?

Also, it's schmooz, not smooze. Finally, I have not been fooled. Gibby isn't suddenly a great coach because an 8:44 HS 2 miler runs an 8:28 steeple after four years of college training. The kid has talent and finally produced a college time which his HS success predicted.

He's great at getting his top guy/girl to the top of the NCAA and keeping the other few dozen people on the team in a perpetual injury hell. Personal bias aside (hatred of him for continually telling my sister to run 6:30 pace every run back from injury so she could stay injured forever), the stats speak for themselves. Sounds personal. But agree with you that it’s not for everyone. training in the Boston winter is not ideal either.
