I'll never forget the way what was once viewed as a joke (a satire of rap, fight for your right ... to paaarrrty) destroyed Smashing Pumpkins live at Shoreline Amphitheatre at that great old grunge music festival in 1994. Corgan was whining that the audience wasn't into his band, which was also a great band, but the Beastie Boys had put on a show.
These guys brought RAP main stream! Word.

I've never liked any music that could even remotely be called "rap," but for whatever reason, I was a big fan of the Beasties. MCA was my favorite, too.
The very first cassette tape I ever bought was Licensed to Ill back in 1986. Very sad.
Not a big Beastie Boys fan, but did like some of their more popular singles. I hate seeing actors/musicians that I grew up with die. Makes me think about my own mortality.

It was neat to see how they evolved from an offensive joke and grew as artists in that category. These were some smart guys. I never knew Adam Yauch even had cancer. I wasn't a big fan. "Ill Communication" was the only cd I ever bought from them but "Liscensed to Ill" was a groundbreaker along at the same time with Run-DMC in 1986.
We used to have all-night arguments at the time over the merit of rap. Rhyming and Stealing took some brain power to make it good. They were among the first of the genre and Kid Rock just never could keep up but I'm sure they were the model.

The Beastie Boys were much more than that.
As I thought was well known, their (unexceptional) roots were in the early 80s NYC Hardcore scene. They experimented with rap, got a better reception, and became one of the original Def Jam acts. Fast forward 25 years and their second to last album won a Grammy for best instrumental album. Lots of great music in between.
To those that say they were a parody or were mocking rap, I always understood that they were huge fans from the beginning and this view may be because from a viewpoint several years later, all mid 1980s rap looks like a parody. Like many great artists, the Beastie Boys had a sense of humor.
Their "Make Some Noise" video shows how many people really liked the Beastie Boys. How many bans could get that many celebrities in one video?
He had more rhymes than he had gray hairs, and that's a lot, because he had his share :(
