He didn't dick over his team. The team includes anyone who shows up. Everyone has the choice not to show up. Everyone has the right to do what is best for them. If i were his coach, i wouldn't want him there if his heart wasn't in it for whatever reason. College isn't for everyone and lots of people waste a lot of time there before they realize that. Teams have to rise above problems like this to demonstrate their character. Lukas deserves the career he wants and owes nobody anything.
The question isnt whethor he didnt dick the team over or not(because he did), its whethor he made a smart choice.
I say its not what he did, its how he did it. He signed to the school which is commiting and trusting yourself to that program. But when he wasnt having success he just left, he didnt trusted the program to be able to fix things.
The question i can see being asked is "why should lucas stay at the school if he know's its not the right fit?" My response is lucas couldnt fully know. It really seemed like he made an emotional choice. He left when it started to get hard.
He doesnt owe the school anything, but he certiantly didnt take his respect with him when he left.
