I can see how hoop earrings can be dangerous. When you're running in a pack or at the start of the race, someone could easily hit the earring and tear through her ear.

I am a certified official and former coach and I think it is a completely ridiculous rule. Jewelry is not dangerous for a runner. Why did the rule need to be implemented across all high school sports when clearly there is no danger to a runner wearing earrings? No one should ever get DQ'd for this violation in track, it should be a warning only.

If you can't understand why earings would be a danger to a runner then you have never really been very competitive as a runner.

My son's HS coach addresses this prior to every meet with his team.

It's a stupid rule and any official throwing a kid out of a race over this is a control freak ass.

We have one guy at a local high school who delights in throwing kids out for petty uniform violations. I've been going to meets at that school for 10 years and not a meet has occurred but that that a-hole hasn't ejected, rudely, at least 5 or 6 kids. It's his little schtick, and you can tell he gloats about it every time. Pathetic.

What kind of uniform violations? And why can't the runners just wear what they're supposed to wear?

The thing I dont like is that she was not allowed to run the 3200 later on. I can see that she got Dqed from the race where she violated the rules, but Dqed from the whole meet?

No! Her earlobe torn! OMFG. That would be the worst injury known to man. We must do all we can, we must throw out common sense, we must at all costs protect the earlobes of our children. If we don't, who will?

OK. Take a breath and think. We have highschool football where we try to crash into each other at high speeds and give the other guy concussions. Same with hockey.

We have HS downhill skiing where you can blow a knee in a second. We have HS baseball with fastballs coming at my head at 70 miles an hour.

We are cool with all of that, yet we are worried some kid is going to get a cut on her earlobe.

I have seen someone elbowed off the track and get DQ'd for stepping on the inside the curb. I have seen someone for a two colored sports bra and boxers coming down and not being a solid color (whe he would wear boxers who knows). I have seen someone in front of a runner get DQ'd for a runner behind him run up on him and fall. I have also seen a runner DQ'd at the CA state meet for making a runner break stride despite no contact.

Officials need to calm down. Could you imagine Billy Mills getting DQ'd? He should of right?

Unless its intentional let the kids race.

Can any of the certified officials explain why jewelry is not banned in college or post collegiate competitions?
