The assistant position is listed as open because the two contracts are linked if I am not mistaken. When the head coach goes, the assistant position becomes available for applicants as well. If the current assistant coach decides to stay it would be great for the university as she has done very well with the throwers thus far and is more than capable of continuing that trend. There is also rumor of another full time assistant position opening to help with the training of all event areas.
Scott Catone left due to another position at UMBC (which he left early as well) amid strange rumors and put the program in a poor situation. While Felix Moreno got a lot of heat for the lack of knowledge in the distance events, a lot of students came into the program under his tenure. This may have been due to exceptional work from his grad assistants, but you cant deny the fact that the last big recruiting class came when he was there. He really sold the university, and recruiting since then has been practically nonexistent. The distance sqaud will be lucky to have 7 guys in XC next fall as many are seniors who were recruited during Morenos time.
It really is an unfortunate situation. No doubt there have been some strange hires with coaches who didnt fit the mold of the university. But the right coach with the right mentality and knowledge can do very well at SFU. I think the addition of another assistant will help tremendously and I'm excited to see who they bring in at the end of the spring.
