Yes i'm aware of which one i was (obviously the first thing i did was look it up). Crazy the difference between having the first 5, or having the first 4 and the bonus ball. I immediately thought it'd be a lot higher.

The higher the jackpot the more people play. By scrimping on the lower winnings, the jackpot can be higher.
Amazingly lotteries have found that more people play the lower their chances of winning are, aka because the jackpot is higher.
Interesting how people behave. Even worse to this effect, some studies claim that old people who play the lottery live longer.
