People who join sororities/frats are the same type of people who are on FB constantly....they are seeking some type of validation of their importance.

I'm conflicted about this. I feel badly for the horrible things these kids have to endure, but then I remember that they're the kinds of horrible people that pledge at frats.
So call it a wash?
This is just another day in the life for the Aghori Sadhu in India...add eating dead bodies, drinking broken glass, hanging themselves from hooks, never sitting, etc...I've seen them in Varanasi, India...these frat boys are pussies

Joining a frat sets you up to make it in life?!? What a joke.

He didn't say "a frat," he said certain frats at certain elite schools. He is right, too. I have no idea if this was one of those frats, but it might have been.
For instance, if you are rushed at certain frats, clubs and secret societies at schools like Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, etc... it most certainly can set you up in life. Want a job at a top hedge fund on Wall Street? Well, how do you think you get one of those fresh out of college?

Like Nediemeyer? Like Marmillard?
Bozos!!!
Looks like the clock's gone back in time :(
I've done a lot of this stuff and I didn't even go to college.

Pretty sure they just have panty clad tickle fights, at least in my mind that is what happens.
And how did you end up turning out?
As the "Mighty Porn Stache".

So going through gross having and joining a frat is the only way? If that's what you have to do to make it to where you want in life, then you suck.
You need to reevaluate yourself or do the rest of us a favor and kill yourself. Literally. Seriously. Weak people are awful.
It's called booting on your brother, and it's a sign of respect.
This guy has no appreciation for the finer things.
Everyone has their own opinion of fraternity life, and that's fine.
If you'd like to read The Dartmouth's (school newspaper) take on the issue, go here:
http://thedartmouth.com/2012/01/25/news/hazing
I am a former Dartmouth kid, and have done several of the mentioned acts above. I have been vomited on, vomited on others, drank beers poured down the asscrack of another man on several occasions (lol), drank to throwup, accepted a bird-feed (opened my mouth under someone else vomiting), etc. These were sometimes done independently of the frat. The important part is to say that
***THESE WERE ALL DONE BY CHOICE***
And I KNOW if a fraternity was known to be forcing their pledges to do these things they would receive a huge backlash from both the greek and general community. Dartmouth is a small enough college where word-of-mouth stories can spread on campus overnight.
The fraternity scene at Dartmouth is a long-standing culture that many will most likely not agree with. Alums will definitely look back and think, WTF was I doing as an undergrad?! The important thing I take from this is that even though these activities are heinous and probably deemed unacceptable to society, they do not follow us out into the real world, where Dartmouth alums are and continue to do great things.

I think you might be a troll.
I was not in a fraternity. I was a track athlete who would have had zero time for a fraternity. Track was my fraternity. I like to believe that I would never do these things. I was responding to the person who said that it was stupid to think that a fraternity could help you later in life. It most certainly can. Just like being an athlete, it connects you with plenty of alumni who enjoy remaining attached to their school/frat/team/club.
The whole impetus of the argument stems from the person who mentioned that certain stresses can lead people to do these horrible things, among those inebriation, legacy and the hope that it will lead to a better life. Is that a good thing? Absolutely not. But it is there and these are 18 year old kids.
I am not sure why you told me to kill myself for suggesting that alms often pass jobs on to other alumni. It happens everyday.
And if you asked any alum, they'd say the worst thing about pledging was cleaning up the basement after parties. Regular parties. Not just the semen/feces parties that this guy liked so much.
Hazing is passe in today's American society. There's no need for that sort of behavior with the freedom and techonological advantages we have. Florida A&M's incident is an anti-gay issue and not a hazing issue. Colleges ban clubs that haze. The Pentagon discharges sergeants and officers that haze. U.S. law has only one execption, Congress allows marines to haze, mentally torture, physcially torture, and looks the other way when marines die from hazing and training excesses.
wow, no wonder Abbey D'Agostino got so fast, I'd be running home after dark on that campus as well.., what a bunch of freaks!
"forced to drink beers poured down a fellow pledge’s ass crack"
OMG. I wouldn't want to even see that, let alone do it!
What do you say to your frat brother the next day??
The practice of hazing ensures that a fresh group of mindless dopes will be carefully cultivated and vetted each year to join a larger group of mindless dopes. Where's the problem?
I find sorority hazing to be quite a turnon. Especially when my gut feeling tells me that some of it involves "licking" or "eating out" or ass-kissing.
