First of all you are all pretty sad. Do not talk smack about CrossFit until you embrace it and try it for yourself. The socks are for deadlifts, box jumps and most importantly ROPE CLIMBS!!! This way you wont get rope burns on your legs. But Im sure some fool will post here and say your doing it wrong if you get rope burns. Again I say come out and run through a few WODs and see how you compare to the other athletes there. See you soon if you have the intestinal fortitude to give it a try.
adam, those socks shalane wears are NOT what you can buy in the store. they have almost twice the legal limit (believe it or not, compression socks are a "medical device" regulated by the FDA- the limit is 45mm i think??). they're pretty darn nice but, anecdotally, I can't really vouch for them one way or the other. I don't think they hurt but.....just weird looking as the only ones they gave me were white, I'd prob wear black ones more often. mostly great for long plane rides.

The non-specificity of XF is what offends the one-track mind of the committed distance runner in particular.
Other sports actually require participants to be fit in a way similar to XF. Most sports benefit from non-specificity.

I was kinda wondering about the socks and I'm doing crossfit - not until 100 hours will i say I'm in training to be a "crossfitter". I think what is amazing is that a style statement (I really don't buy the protection thing - but I'm new... no socks and often barefoot while working out) - socks resulted in people singling out a group of people and the whole cadre of exercise regime a "money making...".
I totally agree it is expensive when compared to any of my previous gym memberships. I did think of it in terms of cost/pound lifted and if I paid more attention to biology in high school, I could probably do a cost/exercise/muscle used which would probably make crossfit one of the least expensive gyms to belong to.
When you really think about it... the cost for the gym is huge but in reality when it comes to the cost in terms of overall health - wicked f'n cheap (yes, I'm from Boston).
Oh and in one post someone said something about the diet .... I am pretty sure that my food bill has gone down. I've never been preached to about diet, but it doesn't take common sense to figure out if you cut back on sugar and junk food and eat healthier food your body uses and doesn't just "waste it out", then you are actually getting more for your money from food. Hmmm, perhaps there is another calculation - cost per pound of/*&%$. I'd say this whole routine would probably rank real high on that one!
So thanks for all the postings as I found it quite amusing and I did find my answer.... women with really great bodies, who worked out a whole bunch can really wear whatever they want and look good in it!

Actually P90X provides a great cross training program for any distance runner. It's very basic stuff, and sure you can do most of it on your own but for me following the dvd actually got me to do it, or at least do enough of it.
So instead of doing 40 push ups and a few squats and calling it a day, I spend 40-50 mins. doing a big mix of stuff. Plus you dont have to go to a gym, you can do it all at home.
Hard to argue against:
-plyometrics
-push ups
- pull ups
-squats
- lunges
- simple moves with dumb bells presses, flys, etc
- a day of stretching or yoga (esp. for older runners.)
crossfitters make a big deal about it being nonspecific and unpredictable but none of them can play basketball, football, or baseball to save their lives....just like distance runners.
the only advantage that distance runners have over crossfitters is that it is an ncaa and olympic event. Also people other than whites participate.
Just got to any porn site like x vids or something and search for crossfit or xfit and you'll see that the socks are more than just to protect the shins.

Wow. We have several African Americans in our gym. Also, Will Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers trained with us.
A rope climb is supposed to be done with arms alone. There is no reason to be using the shins for grip unless you are too weak to actually climb a rope.
If you have any sort of upper body strength you should be doing weighted rope climbs.
No reason to protect the shins when deadlifting either.
Paula would wear anything to make a buck that didnt interfer with her running, that's smart.
She wore a magnet bracelet, nose strip, compression socks.. none of that helps you run fast (or slow), but if the company writes you a fat check why not take the ca$h?
