Solinsky "getting back at Rupp"

So, at least the Repub-Jo's actually admitted they are trying to fabricate false stories and rivalries, bitter ones, where there isn't any of that going on. But, does it really suprise people what they are doing in the light of the Webb "tantrum" that was apparently horrendous for the sport and unbelieveable and out of this world, etc, etc.

These guys...er ladies that have this website are a bunch of spoiled, handed everything to them, ivy league douches who are obviously more into sensationalism then facts.

You're never going to turn track and field into People magazine or the Bachelor so stop f-ing trying and stop meddling with the professional runners lives in ways that do nothing but inflict stress upon them and their inner circles and do nothing but provide you with giggles and page hits.

Thanks for the link. That is much more believable than rupp and alsal concocting a complex pollen sting to get Solinsky to enter a 26:50 race in perfect conditions. Yeah, that makes sense.

Explain how this "rivalry" is good for the sport, yet Webb's display of emotion after his disappointing race was bad for the sport?

So let me get this straight. Rupp signed up for one of the year's only non-championship world class 10K races to have a go at the American Record. He's (presumably) hungry, and a little annoyed that his first 10K record attempt (where he did go under Meb's record) was undercut by Solinsky. Now, when big bad Solinsky shows up to protect his record, you think he dropped out to mess with his head?

So let's break down the possible lines of reasoning here.

He didn't start to mess Solinsky: that makes a WHOLE lot of sense. If Rupp thought he was fit enough to break the American Record, why would dropping out and letting Solinsky run it alone be smart? Now he's out of the race while Solinsky's in it, and if Solinsky's on pace to break his own record, there's nothing Rupp can do about it. Suppose Solinsky had finished in a remarkable time: what would Rupp have said then, according to your logic? "Ohho, I sure got you Chris! Now you've put the American Record even FURTHER out of my reach! Nice going, sucker!!" Brilliant, I'm sure.

Now let's suppose he wanted to save it for USAs: while it makes more sense than just messing with Solinsky/tiring him out, it still is moronic. Pre was just about three full weeks from USAs. Rupp is a multiple time USA champ, multiple time Olympics qualifier, and is pretty much far and away the second best 10000m runner we have right now (he may well be the best... his and Solinsky's fitness over 10000m this year remain unclear). I'm pretty sure he and Al Sal are fairly confident going into USAs that he's going to make the team, so what would the point of skipping out on a world class 10000m where Rupp would have a shot at the AR be in order to conserve for the USA champs? There is none.

And now the final line of reasoning: the pollen counts were high and Alberto didn't want him to run, even though Rupp wanted to run. From the data I've seen, the pollen counts were quite high. Rupp's allergies are known to be quite debilitating. Presumably, here's how it goes from here: As Rupp's coach, Alberto made the call for Rupp not to run, even though I'm sure Rupp was more than eager to have a go at the record. Rupp in a last-ditch effort to run the race, persuaded Alberto to let him warm up to see how he feels and wait to scratch him. Rupp and Alberto conferred and decided skipping the race was the smart thing to do.

Right. Head games is the CLEAR answer here.

i think you have to realize, solinsky ran that race at pre to defend his american record. he stands to gain nothing by doing the same thing to rupp. solinsky isn't that petty and knows there's no reason to enter the race and not run.

You clearly are not reading what I wrote. In the article I was not assessing whether Rupp actually had allergy issues or whether it was a ploy. I was assessing Solinsky's PERCEPTION of what was going on.

What is important is Solinsky himself, not me, THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A PLOY.

That indicates a huge rivalry between the two groups.

I'm not the one who came up with the ploy idea. It was Chris Solinsky himself. Alberto and others have said it was pollen. The pollen was very high that day. That makes sense.

However if these groups got along great they could easily say to one another, "hey just want you to know Galen may not run if the pollen is too high".

Way to avoid several other direct questions and further inflame your tabloid reporting. Are you trying to impress Fox news here in hopes of landing a new gig?

No, it indicates that Solinsky was pissed off after having dropped out.

jeeze. everyone get pissed off about a little excitement being drawn up by a good article 24 hours before what will definitely be a major race. not just Solinksy vs. Rupp, but the Schumacher vs. Salazar camps. Even if there is no rivalry, track fans have definitely had those two camps posed against each other the last few years while each has been striving to have a great deal of success out of each individual camp.

The USA will be bound together as a team, with the same goals for country when it counts (World Champs/Olympics). Until then, what's wrong with a little drama, excitement, and good setups. There's a big complaint there's not enough media attention around our sport, that virtually no one knows any distance runners outside of our running community. Having well written stories about a little gamemanship between two camps is excellent to get people talking, and makes for a more exciting event when the gun goes off.

If you don't like what Wejo has to say, then get off the message board. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but make valid, intelligent statements when you are going to express it. No one is forcing you to read the article, and you naysayers did. You obviously got fired up about it, which in turn, probably made you fired up about the 10k. If you're a die-hard Rupp lover, you're probably pissed about the tone of the article (even though you shouldn't be) and now will be glued to the results of the 10k just waiting for Rupp to beat Solinsky. If you prefer Solinsky, you are probably pumped about a little "challenge" tomorrow, and at a US Championship to boot.

A+ to Wejo; the excitement has been heightened for fans of each camp. And even if any of you didn't like one camp/runner more than the other before this, I bet you have a favorite between them now.

The biggest issue is Schumacher vs. Salazar and the obvious lack of communication and respect between them. Nikeville doesn't seem to be a big happy family.

It's one thing to enter Solinsky in the 10000, but Teg as well? That's awesome. It's great drama if nothing else.

You couldn't be further from the truth and can't be more than 20 years old if you find Wejo's type of "reporting" to be legitimate. It's about integrity, which the people that own letsrun keep showing they have very little of.

This is pretty amusing.

1.) Salazar let Galen warm up with his team mate (uh, I think his name is Mo Farah), but had made it clear that Galen would not be running because of the pollen count. This had been his plan weeks out from going into the race.

2.) Solinsky said that he had planned to run the 10k at Pre well in advance that season, and had to pull out because of a hamstring issue. He was asked a question in a very emotional circumstance, and gave an answer he thought up on the spot. Not exactly Solinsky's state of the union address, my dear.

3.) There is clearly a rivalry between these two athletes. But it's not petty like you're trying to insinuate. So just stop injecting needless drama to hype up the message boards. This should be obvious. The fact that your reporting is so bad as to make up news, is something I'd expect from a tabloid. Is that what you want to be? A running tabloid? Letsrun the tabloid? This is almost as dumb as people caring about the most recent Hollywood relationship... I hope you can do better.

This whole topic seems to disregard the fact that there were 10 or more of the best runners in the world in the race. AR or not, why would GR only sign up as a ploy and why would CS drop out because the 10th best guy did not start. We were all disappointed with what happened with the US runners that day. But it would very shortsighted of them to only focus on each other in that context. I doubt that is what happened. I look forward to the race tomorrow. I hope both run.

The real losers in all this are your humble co-founders.
