Last time I had to pay for it (in Cincinnati 2 years ago), I was paying $90 a month for digital cable and internet service (after the introductory prices had ended).
Yes, you are getting ripped off.

This is true too. My only problem with canceling would would be watching Phillies games.
Don't watch phillies games.
Nah.
just an fyi...when you're getting 'basic service', all of that money doesnt go to comcast. only a very tiny portion of it does.
say you're paying $100/mo for basic service. out of that #100, your paying .50 for ESPN, .75 for CNN, $2.00 for csn philly, etc. etc.
i know you probably only watch a select 10-20 channels, but probably have over 100. and you're paying for each one of them. EVERY cable station has an amount that each individual pays to have that channel each month.
sounds kind of crazy. but they dont want you to know that. so call up and say 'i dont want mtv, cnn, etc'...basically whatever you dont want. it all depends where you live, but that will cut your bill as well. IF they let you do that. some places they do, some they dont. the bigger the city, they probably won't let you.

I don't have to read anything other than your subject to know that the answer is yes. If you have any Comcast services at all, at any price, you are being ripped off. They are one of the worst companies in the United States. Their services are horrible (cable, internet, and phone going out unexpectedly and staying off for long periods of time), and their customer service is deplorable (a nationwide survey done last year ranked Comcast as the worst US company for customer service). On top of that, they are very expensive and deceptive with pricing. If you have any alternative, go with that. I will always choose another company over Comcast (except in the case of my business where they are literally the only internet service provider available in our building so I am forced to use them). I wish people would stop complaining about Comcast and start canceling. Then they might actually get the message that they suck on a massive scale and that their business model is complete and utter garbage.
Please cancel your service and use another provider - for everyone's sake.
Where do you get your information, Fox News? Satellite companies have the most BBB complaints although cable companies have more customers.
http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/business/stories/2010/08/04/satellite-tv-contracts-stir-complaints.htmlIf you want to lower your bill, you should do one of the following.
1. Call customer retention(not customer service) and tell them you are thinking about leaving, they will give you the best deal. Thats their job.
2. Cancel your service for 30 days and you will be eligble for the new customer promotions. Comcast has a special for cable and internet(or phone), HBO, Starz and DVR for $69.99/m. The only catch is, you have to be a new customer. It will go up $25 in the second year.

this is the problem. the way i was looking at it, i was paying
80/month to watch 2-3 red sox games. Not a good value. They screw everyone this way.
no playoffs so i was able to cancel this year.
90% of patriots games available in HD for free, problem will be celtics; probably will have to renew next may.
When you signed the promo deal did that include a contract that required you to keep cable service for some period of time? If so, you will need to see what the cancellation fee is.
I much prefer DirecTV to any cable company.
It's not hard to get cheaper rates. I've had a lot of success with simply calling customer service, and threatening to close my account. I've gotten 'promotional rates' over and over in the past.
Go to their website and look for promotional rates. It doesn't matter if it's for 'new customers only.' Call customer service and ask for the rate.
Be nice! Don't be a jerk! From my experiences, even the lowly service reps have a lot of leeway for offering cheaper rates.
Another tactic for those with roommates is to close the account and have a roommate open a new account under a promo rate.
You can watch the phillies game on Fios TV which verizon was just running a nice triple play deal. You will get only ch 9 but not ch 8. So you will not miss anything unless two teams are playing at the same time. I have direct tv and its was bad until a month ago. Comcast would block all phillies game even on espn and mlbtv.

yes comcast sucks. just switch to a different service every time your promotional period expires

Anybody done this? Are there any catches or drawbacks? Obviously you would have to avoid any long-term contract. Thanks for the feedback!
I get 29 stations free.

All you do is screw this into a piece of pvc, and stick it up on the roof. I was even getting 20+ stations from the living room, so you could probably just put on the ground outside or attach it to an eave, but it's better on the roof.
I realize now that I should have been more specific with my question. Anybody regularly switching providers for internet? I never watch tv anyway.
In 2003 I realized Comcast was ripping me off. I fired them and haven't had cable (or satellite, etc.) since. I've been content with over the air broadcast, especially since they went digital. And it's not like I'm one of those "I so superior and I only watch PBS" dildos. I enjoy watching worthless mindless crap as much as the cable subscriber but just realized that I can get my fill of it from ABC, CBS, WB, etc. And now so much is streamed on the internet. I do take a hit on live sports sometimes...I'll give you that.
Internet is $24 month verizon. It's a ripoff but that's what they charge.
I use nettalk through modem for telephone, $30 a year, with free long distance in the U.S. and Canada. Overseas rates are low, for example 3 cents a minute to England. If the person in the other country has nettalk too, calls are free.
