i may be wrong but i dont think your coach can reduce your scholarship till after track as most schools sign freshman for the whole year not by semester, if he does reduce it your coach is dumb as he should look at most freshman around the country, they almost never run to their potential their freshman year (unless your lowe,fernandez,derrick,puskedra), i really dont get why most freshman dont at least redshirt their first semester

Unless the guy has been laying out of practice and the coach knows he's partying too much, or he's some kind of cancer to the team (you know the types), pulling $$ after one year is pretty harsh.
It sounds like he's trying to run this guy off.
That being said, some coaches suffer from the "grass is always greener" thing and want that next HS runner rather than developing the guys they have on the team.
But I suspect this is a case of the former rather than latter senario.
This is how it works at major conference schools kids. If you want the glitz and glamour you better perform. If you want security go to a mid-major. You can't have the best of both worlds.
When I say it is the coaches problem if an athlete does not perform I do not mean that it is the coaches fault.
I mean he just has to deal with having an athlete that did not live up to his expectations.
The contract does not say you must obtain these specific performance levels to retain the scholarship.

The specifics are irrelevant and nobody cares about your incompetent troll judgement of his performances anyway.
It is not in question that he is doing poorly relative to the performances that got him the scholarship. The question is how he should handle it.
This is purely a SWAG (scientific wild assed guess) on my part however I bet the coach has you burned out on speed work. I would stay where you are given your concerns about transferring but I would try to slow down the coach's workouts and sneak in a little long slow distance work in the AM (on the QT). Most American coaches go nuts on speed work which has a high burnout rate. Many runners dont have the distance background to handle it and consequently burn out. Thats my guess about whats happening to you.

I'd say most freshman who can't compete as they should do so because they can't mentally make the transition to college. It's tough to go from winning in high school to finishing 150th at pre-nats. Learn how to compete on the college scene where success doesn't always mean winning and you'll be fine.

Agreed. Having run for a D1 school on scholarship, a scholarship is an investment. A coaches expectations of a first year athlete are typically pretty low, so I'm guessing you're well below the mark. I was shocked at how much my coach changed from when he was recruiting me to when I was his athlete. If we raced poorly, he would say "you're a scholarship athlete, act like it." And to be fair, he was completely right. As you grow older, you come to accept it, and understand your expectations and the consequences that go with not meeting them. But at first, it hurts.

This is probably more of the coaching perspective (it's all in your head), but having been in the OP's shoes, I still 110% believe it comes down to being over-stressed (higher intensity training overall, further race distance, pressure of school, changes in diet and sleep habits) and under-recovered. The athlete needs to come to grips with this and get their shit figured out. There needs to be good communication between the athlete and coach (what it takes to make become an elite athlete). College gets easier after the first semester, but a scholarship athlete most definitely needs to treat running as a "job". Not just training like an elite athlete, but LIVING like an elite too.

Why does this happen in running anyways? You NEVER see anyone lose a scholarship in revenue sports like basketball or football for not performing to expectations
just goes to show you...unless you are gonna run way under 30:00, 14:30, 3:50, 1:50, etc...you're better off in d3 where they don't pull this shit. maybe you're that good, i don't know, but this is not the first such story I've heard and it just reminds you the culture in D1 sucks.
I ran D1 about 25 years ago and the coach played games with guys' money too (not mine). It really sucked, and he wasn't even a good coach.
Just relax and run well this spring. You kids whine and bitch about needing $, but when you underperform- you get very upset when the coach wants it back. The same would happen in the real world- and while a coach cannot take your $ away for peformance reasons- believe me- he can take it away if he wants to.

- I promise you partying is not the issue, I haven't gone to any house parties or had a sip of alochol going all the way back to my high school prom. Me "going out" consists of catching a movie or the very rare date.
It really sucks because the coach is under tremendous pressue to perform and he's working with a shoe string budget. All it takes is one guy under performing and that could be close to 20% of his team.
That being said, I'd say a coach should be happy if the athlete's freshman year is anything above a disaster. Pulling money after the first semester only in extreme circumstances.

It happens in other sports too. Paul Hewitt at Georgia Tech rescinded two scholarships from players a couple of years ago and it wasn't for rules. It was performance.
