There is a great difference between saying something is biological in origin and something that has biological influences or pre-disposing factors. If eating disorders were biological in origin, then the most effective treatment would not be psychological counseling, it would be medication, nutritional or lifestyle change. The web site referenced has great deal of emphasis on "body image". That is a self perception issue not a "biological issue". Having a driven temperment with the tendency to become obsessive/compulsive can be biological and thus pre-dispose someone to eating disorders and addictions.
Why their is such a link to female distance runners and eating disorders is probably due to the driven/obsessive nature of many runners to begin with. I would venture to say the reason the African runners don't appear to have as many problems is that "Body Image" is not near as strong of a cultural factor, at least not the image of being thin.
It is a terrible epedemic in which the cure can only be found "close to home". Please support these girls and those who are helping them. Encourage all of the "girl runners" you know to "fuel" their bodies and not fall into the trap that less body fat is better. We only get one chance at life!

EVERY single disease is some sort of combination of genetics and environment except for the relatively rare monogenetic disorders that are completely hereditary.
It is a continuum. For example, aprx 50% of monozygotic twins who are schizophrenic also have their twin as schizophrenic. Compare that with 1% of the general population and 100% which would be estimated if it was completely hereditary. Almost everything is a combination.
WTF!!! The ? was where is Chock? Did she move out of Al Sals house and back home? If so too bad bc that was a great opportunity for her to mature into the next best.

You're right, ED is never simple. It is partly biological in origin just as depression, schizophrenia, OCD, ADHD are part biological in origin but they don't happen without environmental triggers. If I have a biological predisposition towards alcoholism but don't grow up in an environment where alcohol is available or abused, am I an alcoholic? No. Check your DSM, disorders are characterized by behavioral symptoms not causes. Just because something is biologically based doesn't mean it can't be effected in any way by choice. And if it can't why bother having treatment and why bother preventing anyone from running when they have no choice anyway. ED is multiply caused and therefore must be multiply treated. People with ED deserve our support because it is never easy but a supportive environment helps no matter what the cause.

I assume "complications" is being defined loosly. Seriously - 1 out of 5 chicks with an eating disorger die from it? No way.
Yes, ED sufferers should be supported to get better, but not through running. Competitive running simply exacerbates the problem, by allowing ED sufferers to publicly justify their unnatural eating and excessive exercising behaviors. EDs must be discussed and purged from our sport. Fortunately, someone with enough education probably supported Caitlin Chock to make the right decision.

She got hit by a car last year and had some really serious injuries. Google her and she has a blog about what happened. It was a hit and run I believe. She is lucky to be walking.

Clearly Salazar's fault.
Check out her blog. Some of it is ok and some of it is actually disturbing and still appears as if she is suffering from an EDO.
She's a total sweetheart who went through physical hell with the hit and run accident. She recovered to the point that she can and does run again. I wish her the best....
