Haglund's Deformity surgery anyone?

I had it for 4 - 5 years. I went back to school in Sept 96 ... then had the surgery in Jan 01 ... started having trouble in Sept/Oct of 96 - had it looked at then ... took some time off, then had it looked at again in 97 ... did some PT etc for quite a while, took more time off ... slow spiral downward, some running, some PT, some cycling ... quit running in 99 or so ... then someone at work noticed my heels and told my to have them x-rayed ... saw another doctor, etc. finally had the surgery. they gradually grew larger ...

... with the bursitis it is a hard cycle to break ... the heels get inflamed from rubbing and become swollen, then the larger swollen heels cause more rubbing and more inflammation and more swelling ...

I've always had extremely high arches and my heels have always been garishly bulbous, but it wasn't until about three years before I finally had surgery on my first (left) heel) that the problem emerged. And what a painful waste of time on 'conservative' measures that was! It simply got to the point, like Co-Runner has described about himself, where even walking was excruciating. The biggest visible change lay mainly in how red my heels were (since the offending bone had always protruded). Hence the reason why I didn't want to waste time with my right heel when the symptoms began emerging early last year, and I sought the physician I could see soonest.

Yeah, I've been trying heel lifts which seem to aggravate the outside of my heels, making walking, running, and standing even more painful. I'm going it some time without the lifts and see how things go - otherwise I'm going to bring up surgery.

i just had surgery today for haglund's deformity.

doctor said he was pretty aggressive with the surgery and removed alot of bone. however, he did say it went well. i'm in a cast right now and i'll see him in 12 days or so. my achilles tendon was detached. i dont really have any pain right now, except at night. i've just kept my foot elevated so far which seems to be helping alot. i notice when i get up to go to the washroom i can feel abit more pain.

How long did you wait before opting for surgery and how large was the bump? Definitely keep us updated on your recovery!

Good luck nmw. Take it easy for a few days, then start doing a circuit of push-ups - crunches - curls. It'll help keep you sane.

I had it four weeks ago - just got the cast off, two weeks or so from being able to hit the elliptical.

stock, i waited for awhile. i was in a cast/air cast all fall pretty much. the bump went down but when i started running again it came back, as did the pain. i should say though, that i had the bump for years, my father always commented on how big it was but i never suffered any pain from it until one day i twisted my ankle twice in a workout, i kept running on it because i was in such good shape and it went away after a week or so, then i twisted my ankle again about a month later and that was it, i couldnt even walk. i took alot of time off running and i was able to walk again and run sometimes but the pain was never there when i was actually running, it was brutal and i was limping the next morning and the following days. i wish i had pictures like co-runner. i know i have a pic of my heels after i got the cast off and you'd be pretty hard pressed to tell the difference. but here's an observation i had about my haglund heel. mine was always very red, and also alot warmer than my other heel...anyone have that?

good luck, the perks that i'm on leave me to do nothing but take it easy. i'm getting the cast off on the 15th when i see the doctor again, he'll make some observations as to whether i should keep a cast on or not.

Yeah, the redness and heat is typical of the condition, and will probably be noticeable after the surgery for a while.

Just wanted to mention that pre-surgery, no matter how much time I took off 1 day - 3 months - I could go out, run hard and I would be hobbling either the next day or as soon as I sat down for any length of time ... then stood up ... ugh.Also, I should point out, I had the unique and unfortunate case of having both spurs on my heels and having Haglund's deformity (large protruding "heel bone") - in my case, I think that I could have dealt with only the protruding heel bone, but the spurs near where the AT attaches were really bad. Anyhow, I'm glad that I had the surgery and in retrospect, wish that I could have had it done earlier.

yeah i can totally relate to going for a run, then relaxing abit afterwards and then get up and walk around and i'd be limping.

anyways, it's been a few days since the surgery and the only place where i can feel the pain right now is where the incision/stitches are, i have to keep my foot elevated at all times, if i sit up and my feet are down i can feel an almost unbearable amount of pressure, kinda tough to go to the washroom...

I have Haglund's too. I was running 80-110/week in my early 40's when it became noticeable then unbearable by age 43 (previously it hadn't bothered me since high school). Like others have stated, it started with an ache and just got worse and worse and eventually I couldn't even run. I took a year off then started easy jogging which is pretty much what I still do. [I wear a larger size shoe now because of the permanent bumps] I seem to have it "under control" (I'm 47 y.o. now). I walk about 3 miles per day commuting to work, and I jog about 4-5 miles, 5 days per week. Sometimes I go for a "long" run of 8 miles but anytime I run far or fast I pay for it with increased pain (and days off). I ice often. I figure at my age if I can walk and jog I'm not going to get surgery. I don't care about racing any more, I'd just like to stay somewhat active.

I am about 15 months out from surgery. I had quite a bit of bone shaved off. I do not have a bump but everything in the area is still much thicker than in my other foot. That has gradually gone down but I assume it will never look normal.

All in all I am pleased with the results. I agree that it is crucial to have a doctor who works with athletes. Mine is/has been on staff with a couple of the professional sports teams in town so he understood my desire to get back to serious training.
