That's a good business plan: offer illegal protection for countries that have $0 to invest in the sport. I think it's awful that the media knows about an athlete's A-sample failing. With even a slight chance of false positives, it could ruin the reputation of an athlete who is completely clean. This could translate to the loss of hundreds of thousands of dollars in appearence and sponsorship money. Positive B samples should be the only results made public.

A simple statistical exercise reveals just how bad a-samples can be with only a slight chance of false positive.

Let's say you are 1000 athletes tested all at once with 100 of them doping. Let's say the test has a 99% accuracy rate, with the remaining 1% showing false positives (for this test there are no false negatives).

Let's say you test positive for drugs: what are the chances you are actually dirty?

It's not 99%.

100 dirty athletes will test positive.

1% of 900 athletes will make 9 false positives.

If you test positive, that means the probability you're actually a doper is only 100/109, i.e. about 92%. So there's an 8% chance that your reputation will be tarnished forever since you were clean but you tested positive, which is why a-sample results should never be made public. It's unfortunate Lagat had to deal with this bullshit--he even successfully proved in court that EPO tests were still in their infancy and maybe were only like 96% accurate (4% of 900 athletes makes 36, 36/136 is 26%).

It's not fair to Kaouch that his positive A sample should be made public.

Now if you repeat the test for the B-sample even with the same chance of a false positive, the probability that a non-doper will test positive are extremely close to zero, even if the same test is used with the same error rate (though interestingly, there's still a possibility that a non-doper will test positive again--which is why I don't support lifetime bans).

Same exercise repeated, two tests mean the error rate goes down to (100%-99%) x (100%-99%) = .01%.

109 athletes have tested positive.

All of the dirty ones, 100, will test positive again.

.01% of 9 clean athletes testing positive again makes .09 athletes. .09/109 = .08%. I.E. miniscule. B-sample positive guys can be treated with the derision that some letsrunners are wasting on Kaouch

Simply by guilt of association. There have been far more Americans that have been caught doping than Moroccans.

The same people that are around the non-distance running dopers are around the American distance runners.
