Potts is open to the public 3 times per week. I know that's not completely open, but just wanted to clarify. Boulder does have a ton of runners and if you're looking for seclusion, it's going to be tough to find. Do groupies really show up at the track and time elite runners? That's hilarious.

Sounds like the Boulderites are taking his comments too personal. Boulder isn't for everyone and it's definitely a unique place in many ways. It's not a slam on Boulder. Different strokes for different folks.
I agree with him on one point, I also hate driving to go for a run.
Driving to go for runs sucks. No matter where you live in Boulder you end up driving to most of the runs you do. That sucks.
Boulder is a great place for a variety of different things but the running trails themselves i don't find to be that good. I could see why a guy like mottram who can train anywhere wouldnt want to be in Boulder.

I agree, although Boulder is beautiful it wouldn't be that attractive to go if you are foreign. That is why Albuquerque is still the place for foreign athletes to train at altitude, it's cheap, mild climate and good running community without all the politics inherent in Boulder.
I've never been to Boulder and have heard good and bad things, but I thought there were trails everywhere in Boulder. Now I hear that you have to drive to get to trails? Detroit has some great trails, too. You just need to drive to get to them.

There are several pretty solid trails to run on but you pretty much have to drive to 70% of them. Usually there is at least one trail close enough to run to from home no matter where in town you live but all others involve a drive. Most of the trails don't seem to be very entertaining either. Great scenery looking at the mountains but alot of wide trails with very long straight stretches through fields. Pretty good place to run but not all its cracked up to be in my eyes.
"Training in Alburquerque" is code for buying PEDs - don't kid yourself.
If you're looking for seclusion, I would say the best place to find it is the pacific northwest.
I lived in Boulder for about 3 and a half months and I drove to trails 2 times that I can remember. I thought there was plenty of terrain that could be reached from my door. Come to think of it, there was also one place that I would ride my bike to every now and then, about a 10 minute ride.
Some of the trails are a little hard to access just because you have to run up into the hills to get to them but if you come to Boulder to run a lot and run on hills, then that shouldn't matter much.
As for the people, sure there are some elitists, but I'd say that Boulder is a good place to go for a summer with some people who you know you will enjoy spending time with.

You're telling me that if you're at the track, finished your workout, and are sitting around stretching and shooting the breeze with your training partners, then Mottram or some other big shot shows up and starts laying down a ladder workout, you wouldn't hit start on your watch as he begins his 1600? You're not curious to see how fast the big boys do the workouts you do?
I highly doubt there are "groupies" who show up to time elites' workouts. But at a busy track where lots of well-known people train, of course people are taking a look at what others are doing. It's natural curiosity -- but it's also a perfectly legitimate reason for some guys to prefer training somewhere a bit more isolated.

I have to agree with this guy. Half the people on this board would cream their pants if somebody started a thread saying that they just timed Mottram's track workout in Boulder.

Nope, you must either have never lived in Boulder or be really stupid.
I distinctly remember Mark Nenow (a runner ahead of his time in many respects insofar as his accomplishments were exceedingly well earned) stating that at least half of his work-outs needed to be by himself and in relative solitude. This makes sense to me, because carrying a world class training load is no easy feat, and there are many days when the distraction and pressures of other runners and hype is counterproductive. So I can understand Mottram's comments.
