Why do Iranians say they are from Persia? It hasn't been Persia for a thousand years. It is akin Italians saying they are Roman. Is it because of the negative conatation that goes along with Iran? Is it because you/they are kind of Sha supporters and wish to distance themselve from the Ayatollah's regime?
I really am not attacking just curious. There must be a reason why people who come from Iran have reverted to using Persian. Then again maybe I am assuming a explicit reason where there is none...

And if you actually new anything about Iran you would realize that many people living in Iran are not Persians. Many are turkman, lurs, kurds and, yes, you jackass, even Arabs. You would also know that the Persians were Zoroastrian and also had a totally different language and culture than the religion, language and culture introduced by Islamic nomads who imported Islam, Farsi, and an entirely different alphabet when they conquered the remains of the Persian empire. Quincidentally this is the language, god(they were actually Sunni, a latter ruler imposed Shi'ism) and customs still in use today. And this was only the first, of many times, what is modern Iran was conquered and controlled by one group or other invariable polluting the gene pool and irreversible changing the culture from that of the "Persians".

It was a simple question: Is there a reason that Iranian people have conciously choosen to call themselves Persian, a heritage that is tenuous at best for even the most "persian" amoung them rather than Iranian? Or is it just something without a explicit logic behind it.

So I guess people from the United States are ... United-Statesians? ... You are not a sprinter (I am, and white). The black sprinters I've met are more positive about Jeremy and white sprinters having some success than most people on letsrun for 2 reasons:
(1) It means a bigger pie (more money) for everyone if white audiences can see that sprinting is not just a "black" sport.
(2) Whites may better appreciate how hard (particularly the 44- and sub-10 guys) black sprinters work, and that their success is not just because of the color of their jeans.
