Vinny meddling??? There was talk at USATF's about how there was going to be a "restructuring" of their staff. AD didn't like 4 head coaches. This now makes me think that Vin was behind Deena and Andy leaving. If so, that's pretty crappy. |

It is pretty crappy, and it takes out a huge chunk of the competition from the Pac-10 in the distances. High school kids will see that Stanford is a crumbling house and that dynasty will disapear faster than it appeared. On the national level, it lets distances powerhouses that are still intact have even more points at nationals in track, and consolidates the points up top even more on the cross scene...very interesting indeed. The only stop to it is if Stanford can bring in the right distance coach, but he or she would have to be pretty good to stop the hemoraging(sp)?. |

I have heard Gerard is staying at Stanford. |

based on your almost concurrent posting of a thread about ryan hall's journal on your website, i have to assume that you heard this from him. i imagine he would be a pretty good source, but then again tim o'dowd says he heard it from the horse's mouth, which seems to be a better source. i'm just surprised that so few people are discussing this. if gerard leaves, what does it mean for ryan hall and ian dobson? is there any chance that vin was considering going to oregon but knew there was a chance he might instead return to palo alto? i guess we'll find out the answers over time. does anyone who is in a position to post publicly know the answers to these and similar questions? |

why would vin meddle? he left the program to pursue his own work. why can't den and andy leave to pursue their work elsewhere and/or family interests? why do you feel (you implied) that stanford can't change the direction of track and field program away from distance running? do you KNOW how much influence dena and andy had in the program? i would guess (yes, i admit to guessing) their influence wasn't that large. again, why would vin want to influence dena, andy and the entire stanford program? he has bigger things on his mind than the program he left 2 years ago. |

"ironically, Gerard will now be competing alongside in the Colonial Athletic Association and to some extent recruiting against William & Mary, the school he coached at prior to arriving in Palo Alto." This not irony. At best it's coincidence, but even that's a stretch since a guy with roots in Virginia might be expected to return to the general area someday. (Ironically, I posted some equally useless, off-topic bullshit the last time I visited letsrun.) |

Surprised-you would be correct as to my source. I think Ryan goes where Gerard goes, but that is just a guess. Ryan has said nothing of the sort to me. |
| Nope |

You may have heard it, but you heard incorrect info. He is gone. |

Dena leaving makes sense.. she's got a young girl, who she had to cart around all the time at meets.. perhaps she wants to spend more focused time with her daughter and husband? |

nope. she's got two kids. one is an infant and that one was getting hauled around at meets, too. two kids hanging off of her. how is she supposed to coach? and what if you are one of her athletes and you aren't into kids? you're going to wonder where her priorities are. apparently she finally wondered what they were too and she resigned. |
if gerard leaves, what does it mean for ryan hall and ian dobson?
Hall signed with Asics and Dobson signed with Adidas, they're not going to be coached by Gerard anyway. |

Is there supposed to be some cause and effect here? Your shoe sponsor normally has little to do with your coaching situation. |
| Does it Matter? |

That's true but they were looking for a new training/coaching situation anyway, I can't speak for Hall but Dobson was trying to figure out what the next step was coaching and environment wise. (Obviously they can't run for the Nike led Farm Team.) |
