      • The Black Cactus is back! Dude is a 4 time Olympian starting back in 2000 and just placed 3rd in the NYC marathon in 2:11:23. He's 39 years old! That's super impressive, especially given that he's had a bunch of injuries for the past few years. What a boss. Age isn't a factor.

        Americans place well in major races because they ignore the monster surges that are laid down by the eventual winners. Stronger runners, who aren't as strong as the eventual winners, chase those moves, blow up, and drop out, leaving the Americans to mop up the minor placings. We saw it today with major players like Stanley Biwott, Desisa and Ritz dropping. Ward demonstrated this in the Olympics. Even Hawkins showed this in the best field ever assembled by finishing 8th in London this year.

        The US (and other non-africans) have put down good performances, but there is some self deception going on if the results are taken as indicators of their standing on the world stage.

        Given that the masters record (2:08:42) is faster than Abdi's all-time marathon best (2:08:56) set in Chicago more than a decade ago, that would be a stretch.

      • Bummed that this thread doesn't have more individuals dropping in to leave their praise.

        Well done Black Cactus! It was the most exciting part of the race for me. Truly great performance.

      • Isn't he the only athlete in the field that has had 2 roommates that have served drug suspensions?
        1 was tripped up in NY

        He also trains with Lagat for a couple months a year.

        He also trained entirely with Mo Farah this past winter.

        He is now the first American at NY during the year that they started their Clean Sport thingy.

        Ridiculous.
