The guys that beat him are pretty studly.

That's not going to help his chances to be invited to the 168St Millrose at all. Conventional conversion places that at 4:10/11. Hope Dave Monte thinks the hometown boy, HS Mile winner, then Columbia going NCAA 1500 Record holder and headbanded runner will fill some seats-Columbia alumi might have a bit of money left over to buy a ticket even in todays economy.

Come one Merber is not really a 3:35 guy. He ran that at swarthmore where they started from the wrong line. Ask anyone that was there.

It looked like they started where a 1500 usually stars from the videos.

Not sure what conversion calculator you're using. That doesn't even matter. Merber's best 800 is a 1:49... that's really around a 4:00 mile conversion. Clearly, he's more oriented towards the mile.

Besides, it's a f*cking rustbuster.

Kid hasn't done a workout since christmas, and runs 2:25.
He'll run 3:57 in time.

Purdy puts both 2:25/6 and 4:11/12 a couple of ticks below 880 points.

The comment is more directed to Merber getting another Millrose invite than to figuring out what event he might be better at. He is a 1500>3000 guy at this point and I doubt that will change this season.
We have a Good Kyle/Bad Kyle situation.
Good Kyle could run 3:55ish indoors
Bad Kyle could and has run four minutes and too many seconds in big time settings.
Of course his job is to score points for Texas at their meets where he is conditionwise is a function of that not of getting an invitational meet invite. Point taken. Plus I'm thinking first Fri in Feb but now the Millrose is on the Saturday of the 3rd weekend in Feb.
Still Merber better drop a time that signals Monte he kicked the rust and is ready to run with the big boys.
I assume Merber wants to and that Dave Monte has him on the short list for a lane. Depending on how many bigger fish NYRRs pocketbook can land there might not even be a lane for, shall we say, the 'walk-ons".

I'm fairly sure that a time still counts even if you only did it once? I'm fairly sure that he did it less than a year ago, so he shouldn't be called a one hit wonder without even getting another track season in?

A properly trained, very fit miler can run 3:59/4:00 with only 1:52 800 speed, taking into account they run consistent splits. You'll notice a lot of old school milers, or current 5k/10k guys fit this mold. If you're running 1:48/1:49, 3:54 (3:36/3:37 1500) should be totally possible.

Remember, Gabe Jennings ran 3:35 off of 1:46; Daniel Komen only ran 1:45/1:46 & due to his strength (and possible EPO) went 3:29 for 1500m. Lagat, who even with his incredible closing speed, is a 1500/5000 guy, has only run 1:46 on multiple attempts (3:26/3:47/7:29/12:53).

this is only true if they have never gotten in a well paced 800 race, just about any sub 4 miler will run way under 1:52 if they get in a race that goes out in 54 and is rabbitted. a lot of milers with soft 800 PRs have just never gotten in that type of race when fit. just my opinion
