So sad. He was a hero and personal favorite runner when I was in HS and college. Remember seeing his at the 84 world cross country championships. |

Wow, that really sucks. Condolences to his family. I idolized the guy in high school. |

Pat was an Olympian, but his forte was cross country. You are correct when describing him as "tough". That he was. |

Sad news. I doubt that anyone will ever beat his record for XC titles. |

he was only a 4:29 miler in high school, but developed into a top notch world class runner one of USAs best ever in cross country. i am sad i always admired the guys that werent anything in high school and became top international stars porter, bill rodgers, frank shorter, dan lincoln, steve scott, etc. today many college coaches wont give a 4:29 miler the time of day |

in hs I always wanted to look like Pat Porter when I ran. I, um, didn't. Very sorry to friends and family. |

Almost took the bait. I see now that Pat was playing the part of Lasse Viren in that screen shot from "Without Limits". Here's Pat, sans beard: http://www.juanjosemartinez.com.mx/new%20images/10mil_porter.jpg |

Pat Porter was one of the reasons I went to Adams State (many years later). He was an amazing athlete. I wish I would have met him. I wonder if someone has the poster of him running in The Great Sand Dunes near Alamosa? He had a great stride. |

Man that is sad news. Porter was a stud in XC. His 4th place in the 84 World XC was one of the gutsest runs ever. Very sad. |
