Russia and Ukraine pay very well and the gold medalists in Russia get an SUV in addition to the $. SOOOOOOO why is it that these countries pay but the US does not pay its athletes??????? Seriously? These federations also fund training camps too. Seriously, Sanya Richards-Ross made a damn good point in some of her tweets on this last week. |

The United States Olympic Committee rewards Olympic medalists with honorariums. A gold medal brings $25,000. Silver medals get you $15,000. And a bronze is worth $10,000. The Weekly Standard, a conservative news magazine, ran the numbers and tabulated that the tax bill on a gold is $8,986, silver is $5,385 and bronze is $3,500. That was taken from the following article: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/olympics-fourth-place-medal/winning-gold-medal-brings-9-000-tax-bill-171555961--oly.html |

That is not true. Look it up yourself using the U.S. tax code. An individual, with no other exemptions other than self and earning $25,000 a year, pays $3,329 dollars in federal tax. There might also be a state income tax, depending on which state you live in, but it would only be a few hundred dollars. We don't like taxes but no need to lie about it. They are using the flat 35 percent rate, which only applies to the highest income portion and then it still doesn't figure out to be 35 percent because you are taxed by increments, so much for the first, then so much for the second tier etc etc. As an acct, I hear this BS all the time, the gov takes 35 percent of your income. Wrong on all counts, even for Romney. |

Sometimes there is federation money as well. |

That would be the amount withheld, not the final taxed amount. Tax is withheld at the same rate yours would be if you earned a bunus at your job, but when you file, it is all taxed at whatever your tax rate is. |

I do not believe they award anything to the athlete for Olympic medals, but they do have several incentive programs tied to Olympic performance. They awarded $100,000 in a bonus pool to 18 athletes for qualifying for London. Athletes awarded include: Kyle Alcorn: runner-up, steeplechase Keisha Baker, 1600 meter relay pool (5th place, 400 meters) Lance Brooks: champion, discus throw Stephanie Brown Trafton: champion, discus throw Becky Holliday: runner-up, pole vault Cyrus Hostetler: 5th place, javelin throw# Molly Huddle: runner-up, 5000 meters Kibwe Johnson: champion, hammer throw A.G. Kruger: 3rd place, hammer throw Jamie Nieto: champion, high jump Kara Patterson: runner-up, javelin throw Jeff Porter, 3rd place, 110 hurdles Alice Schmidt: 3rd place, 800 meters Amanda Smock: champion, triple jump Aretha Thurmond: runner-up, discus throw Morgan Uceny: champion, 1500 meters Jason Young: 3rd place, discus throw Rachel Yurkovich: 4th place, javelin throw+ Coaches who have an athlete medal are also eligible for a bonus supplement. |

I remember reading that Stefano Baldini got about 130,000 for his gold. A gold medal marathoner would also get a ton in appearance fees every time he raced. |
