Haebe, from Western St. (national champion in the steeple, just ran at the trials) is in critical condition after a fall after a night out drinking. Truly unfortunate incident. Hope he is able to pull through and have a full recovery.

Ryan obviously made some poor decisions (haven't we all?), so before people start ripping on him, please remember that he is someones son, brother, boyfriend and a friend too many.

Ryan is one of the toughest SOB's out there and is fighting hard. He's already progressing significantly more than anyone would have ever expected.

I thought LRC was bad, but damn, read the comments under the article.

The kid slipped climbing a 13 foot ledge. That isn't very high. It wasn't like he was scaling the side of a high rise. If you haven't scaled a 13 foot ledge in your life - drunk or sober - you may cast the first stone...

I don't know anything about this kid, but I hope he pulls through. I think it is sick that anonymous a$$holes take advantage of a situation like this to... I don't even know what... anonymously try to sound tough? Smart? Cool? The lack of empathy is astounding. In fact, it is nearly psychopathic.

It is really sad.

When people are drunk and they fall they almost always fall head first.

The natural response to use your hands to break your fall is lessened so the head takes a lot more trauma than it usually would.

Believe it or not, if you just fell standing up straight onto a hard surface like a hardwood floor or sidewalk, and didn't break your fall with your hands, just let your head impact, in many cases you would be out cold or in a coma.

Some dumb drunk kid fell on the ice at my school head first and fractured his skull. Very easy to die in these situations.

I think it was ballsier than you think. It was 13 ft to the second story balcony, plus I would assume, another 13 to the ground. He was up pretty high.

For those that care,

Although still in critical condition, Ryan is fighting hard. His body is attempting to return to normal levels (blood pressure, temperature..etc)

Sensory test have gone well. Really, anything that could go well has gone well so far. He's far from being out of trouble, but there is a lot of hope.

As a former Western State runner it always make me sad to hear unfortunate accidents happen to them. I just hope and pray he will pull through this. Its already more than enough that they have lost past teammates (Lisa Duits who happened to be a steeplechaser) and so many others. I'm sure his friends and family would appreciate it if others would only offer words of encouragement instead of snarky smartass comments. People make mistakes and sometimes they result in crappy situations. All they can do is hope for the better.

If you're not awake after 48 hours there's a good chance of permanent brain injury. From the description he's lucky to be alive and have a chance at all. God bless him, may he come out of this the same he was before and use his mistake to educate others.

Certainly everyone hopes for a full recovery here. I don't think that's really debatable.

One has to wonder if anyone tried to talk him out of climbing up three stories while drunk.

Any updates on his current condition and what could reasonably be expected as far as recovery goes?

Thoughts and prayers to Ryan and his friends and family. If his xc nats race in Spokane was any indication of his toughness, I like his chances.

As a former d2 athlete, to see a rising start in the d2 world have an accident like this is very sad. I certainly hope he recovers from this and finds good health quickly.

Thanks Rojo.

Last night he squeezed his mother hand, and moved his head all on his own.

These next 24 hours are very crucial.

Knowing how tough Ryan is we all have high hopes.
