If you look at our biggest success stories of native born talent you see that Galen Rupp and Alan Webb both ran their best times when they were under the coach that developed them initially. One could argue that the school system of 2-4 peaks a year from is not sustainable and talent development requires an athlete to follow a well suited programme for up to a decade or more to reach their pinnacle. Could America viably move away from the school system and develop talent like soccer does? |

There's no doubt that running with other talented athletes from a relatively early age is the best means of developing talent, assuming a good coach. It's no accident that athletes with good training partners now dominate American distance running. This is different from the 1990s and early 2000s when many of the best Americans trained separately and did not progress to the world level. |

You guys are talking about changing the system for the masses for the sake of the very, very few. There are tons of great HS programs out there. What many of you don't quite get is that club systems really only work if the athlete is all-in. Those same athletes can excel in good HS programs. Now if there is not a good HS program for them......... different story. But I don't necessarily buy this "you need the same coach for 9 straight years" crap. There are different phases of life and sometimes change can be a good thing for motivational purposes. |
