Assuming the local papers are correct and Vin will be stepping down in the next few years, why on earth would Oregon put a sprints coach in as head coach? Look, Johnson is an outstanding coach, the results speak for themselves. But so was Martin Smith- and he focused all over the map with regards to the track team. The lack of focus on distance running was a key reason he was forced out. Putting a sprints coach as head coach at Oregon- even if he promises say 30% of scholorships to distance and mid distance- seems like a recipe for disaster. Johnson will excel at Oregon but upset the base that wants a perenial, consistant distance corps. |

Their distance groups suck right now. Hasay total failure, Kosinski bombed, do they even have men distance runners? Didn't hear from them all year. Oregon is now a sprinter school. |

And the natives will get restless. Johnson is a Great coach, but Oregon long term is not the school for him. We are talking Eugene/Nike- so there will always be support- but does anyone think that support will continue to stay at such a high level is mid-d and distance takes a smaller and smaller chunk of the programs prestige? Martin Smith did exponentially better than his predecessor at Oregon- and got shown the door. Andy Powell may be a nice guy- but I dont see him being able to bring in top talent with less money/ and Vin not being the head coach. Vin acn recruit distance runners that is for sure |

If Vin is still in their true as an administrator, do you really think he will let it go all sprints!? Johnson is the right person to lead the Ducks. He is smart and realizes where is bread is buttered. Great move to keep RJ from moving elsewhere. |

Texas A&M is better than Oregon. Their cross team made it to nationals. And they have a girl who got SECOND in the olympic trials 10,000 meter and should be going to London. A&M's DMR is also better. What more is there to say? Pat Henry>Vin Lananna |

10/10. So true, Oregon is loaded up with young freshmen and redshirt freshmen distance and mid-distance runners. Robert Johnson is very smart, understands the dynamics at Oregon, gets along well in the Eugene track community and will have astute support folks (Vin and Uncle Phil) "guiding" him at times). IMO, this is a brilliant move by Oregon and will actually make them more competitive with programs like Texas A&M, Florida, LSU and Florida State. The new Oregon program will be more balanced as we can be looking for new emphasis on the throws in the near future. |

I'd like a little clarification regarding the inane comment above: "...Smith did exponentially better..." than his predecessor. Considering that SMith's predecessor was Bill Dellinger, who won national championships during his reign, coached Pre, Salazar, Chapa, Cruz, etc. this comment is clearly from an idiot. SMith did not connect because he would not connect. Johnson is an insider, has Nike's support, and will succeed at Oregon. |

If you all think Vin has been coaching distance the last few years, you're sorely mistaken. Besides the top 2-3 guys on the team, Andy Powell has been coaching everyone else. The results the last few years? Those have been just as much Powell as they have been Vin. This takeover by Johnson is a good thing because Powell is still around to coach the same runners. |

Yes, Lananna was the ADMINISTRATOR of the entire Duck track program, he was not a day-to-day event coach. He has to focus on the big picture -- recruiting, budgets, etc., not daily workouts -- that's Powell's job. |

Im guessing the poster is comparing how Smith did vs. Dellinger last 5 years or so. Overall, Dellinger was great. The last few years, Oregson was seriously lacking as a pac 10 and national contender. |

I talked to Lukas V about Oregon a couple months ago. He pretty much just laughed at their entire distance program, said they had no idea what they were doing. The only decent post collegiate distance runner that went to Oregon in the last 5 years is Galen Rupp, and he has Al Sal coaching him!! |
