Sorry the the delay. It's been a busy few days. Lots of races to choose from. Enjoy! The Winner Billy Mills in winning the 10000 meters in the 1964 Olympics. Check out the pushing and the shoving in the last lap. His kick in the last 60 meters past the favorites through the lapped traffic is one of the greatest moments in track and field history. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOj0zjPzg-c Runner-Up If you have ever wondered why Steve Jones is a legend. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ-_3Ug3wqU&feature=related Second Runner-Up 1983 World Championship in Helsinki. Reminds me of the finish of an 800. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GLhs9yle4Q World Record Bekele's 26:17 is probably the best world record out there and the greatest individual performance. Bolt's 200 is second place. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6roXDygZ3ag I'll do the Steeplechase next. |

No geb and tergat at sydney? |

Geb vs Tergat in Sydney was the greatest race of all time. You usually come up with good stuff but how could you screw this up? No other 10000 meter race even come close. Those two going stride for stride over the last 100m and Haile winning with the lean for an Olympic gold was historic. |

Viren's 10000m in Munich, falling over and setting a world record is the best. |

That was a wonderful race. |

I only select the races. I don't know any of the athletes personally and can't say who was doping for sure or not. |

It was a good race, but you will find the above races a little better. Take a little time away from looking for jobs or scanning the results from the local Firecracker 5K from last year to educate yourself a little bit. |

And this is different than 1971 European Champs how???? Jurgen Haase being knocked out of the way by vodka-fueled Finns post-race........PRICELESS. |

Before I opened this thread I said Geb vs Tergat Sydney 2000 and none of the videos changed my mind. Or Väätainen, just because of the story behind the race (Who the fvck is Väätainen - I am Väätainen) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfa16vKnVRI |

I generally agree with the Mills selection. That was an absolute dog fight. Fighting around the track and lapping runners with more contact than is allowed in soccer (plus I'm a sucker for an upset). It's poor taste to omit the Geb/Tergat Sydney race. Tergat learned the lesson from Atlanta and made it a real battle and surprised the hell out of Geb. |

Not sure how I feel about omitting Geb/Tergat from Sydney. World records are cool, but rarely that exciting. The Kemboi/Cherono 2003 World Champs steeplechase better be in your next post. |

You can't even define bekele's WR as a race. That was a rabbited time-trial. |

That was a wonderful race.
I did expect to see this in the list. Coming three days after the heats (when Bedford and Puttemans? threatened the WR), it was televised in its entirety (at least on the East Coast of the US) by ABC. I was beside myself, seeing Bedford open with a 60, watching Shorter (three days after his AR) gradually and intelligently cover the mid-race surges, on his way to another AR; seeing Viren bounce up from his fall and actually take the lead a lap later; the most exciting distance race, whether in person or televised, that I've ever seen. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yF99ZnafpiI Sorry, I used to be able to find the entire race on YT... |

Yes you can. It was a race against the clock. |

And this is different than 1971 European Champs how???? Jurgen Haase being knocked out of the way by vodka-fueled Finns post-race........PRICELESS.
Väätainen's all out sprint against Haase is the stuff of legends, and incidently was named one of sport's (not just track and field) all time greatest moments by ESPN. Disappointing that the OP missed this one. |

both ofGeb's and Tergat's battles should be up there. I also lived Paula vs the Africans at the '99 worlds in Sydney. |

I'll do some women's races in the future. Interesting that some of the longer distance races have only been around a couple of decades. |
