Women's 10,000m at the Trials: Just Finish and You May Go to the Olympics 6/19/2012 5:28PM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
We're working on our entries for the prediction contest and I noticed in the 10,000m only 4 women running have the "A" standard and one of them is Shalane Flanagan who has said she won't run the 10k at the Olympics.

So all Amy Hastings,Janet Cherobon-Bawcom, and Lisa Uhl need to do is finish and have the race not go under 31:45 and they're going to London.

Kastor, Rhines, Magdalena Lewy Boulet are all out.

I'm surprised Rhines doesn't run as she has the standard and I'm surprised someone like Kim Conley isn't giving it a shot. Both are in the 5000 instead of the 10,000. The 10,000 is first.

So the question is will the other runners mount a shot at sub-31:45 and can any of them actually run this fast?

There are a few with times within striking distance of the A. The only thing in favor of the women without the A is that if they can run 31:45 then Hastings, Cherobon-Bawcom and Uhl might very well not be able to muster it for that race as none of them have shown the ability to run 31:45 easily.

What's the weather like in Eugene? Will it be too hot to run a fast time?

Never go by times and numbers. Do you remember the last trials when McGregor thought all she had to do was finish?

I think Shalane may say that so everyone lets her go and she goes out to tempo run, wins and changes her mind.
would they still go??

Since they are the only ones with the A standard, would Amy Hastings,Janet Cherobon-Bawcom, and Lisa Uhl still go to the olympics even if they finished dead last, if the others failed to get the A standard before the olympics?

yes.

I'm surprised Magdalena Boulet isn't running this instead of the 5000. A lot more bodies in the 5000. Making the team at 10 is much easier.

alisha williamshas the B standard, if she finishes in the top 3. wouldnt the USA send her (B) and 2 A's?

this stuff confuses me.

I think Boulet had a slow time recently in Colorado.. could be something going on like an injury that might hold up in shorter race.. just a guess.

No a 'B' standard can only go if there are no 'A's at all
would they still go??

so the bottom line is that this should be a fast race at least until towards the end when runners trying to make the A standard start to run out of gas.

Always lots of drama. Should be fun. 5:06 per mile pace needed to go 31:45, watch the early laps, 76 second laps times 25, 15:52 at halfway for a shot

Huddle probably could have made this 10,000 team but chooses the 5000 instead. She'll probably make that, but it's got much more talent in it than the 10,000.

It's simple, I think: in the Olympics, if there is one "A", all must be "A's". One "B" and only one "B" can go, but only in the absence of an "A".

Looks like the Golden Age of American Female 5k/10k runners has come to an end. Unless Molly Huddle returns to 2010 form and some of these college runners pick up the slack when they hit the pro circuit.

I think Hasay could beat the rest of the Field! Not the top 3, but the rest, RIGHT NOW.

She may not even be the best 10K runner on her team (big difference between 8K XC and 10K track).
is the promise ring dead?

Or She may just want to win a national title and continue to focus on the marathon (I just can't see her running a "tempo" at the trials). She's already achieved an olympic medal in the 10,000m, now time to focus on achieving an olympic medal in another event.

So isn't anything less than going for a pr a "tempo" training run? If it's time to go for a different event than why bother?
