Currently training for a half marathon in December goal time is 1:10 or faster, right now I am beginning to increase my mileage to 70, have been consistenly running 45-50 mpw for 3 months now (around 7-630 pace). This past weekend I ran 15:11 5k after a 7 mile warm up. My past three runs have been as follow:

Monday 6mi @ 6:16 pace then 5 at 6:01 pace.
Tues 8 mi @ 6:05 pace
Wed 5 mi @ 5:58 pace second work out later tonight

Basically I'm freaking out, am I running too fast too early? I feel pretty comfortable on my runs thus far. But can I honestly keep this up until December?

Yes to a burnout; you are if you think you are.

Why are you running every run at roughly the same pace?
Because they feel comfortable?

That 15:11 5k after a 7 mile w/u shows me you have the speed to run a sub-70 half marathon, much faster in fact.
I had that speed and ran 70-80 miles/week for a long time, and I was always around or under 70 minute half marathons.

Now, bump up the mileage over time, run most of that mileage much slower than these 6 minute/mile runs you've been doing. Seems like you just need to build up some endurance strength to support the speed you already have.

And my gosh, have some fun about this. You're way ahead of where you need to be, just get out on the road/trails and enjoy plodding along for a change. Throw in those occassional threshold runs, drop a few crazy long workouts, like 3 X 2 or 3 miles, and do the random 10k to see where you are.

Thanks I guess I needed to hear that I am on track to my goal time. So far I have been enjoying this, I am extremly happy to be in this kind of shape again, this is my first time self training without a coach and lack the feedback from my training. At the same time I am learning more about running and training from reading books.

I'll be sure at this point to get my long runs in and cut back on my pace.

Again thanks for your wise words.

Sounds like you should be able to run about 1:10 based on your 5k time. I agree that you should slow down most of your runs a little if you are building mileage to prevent injury.

It might not be a bad idea to take a week, maybe late summer as sort of a mini-break. You could run very low mileage for a week or take a few days or a week off and hopefully you won't lose much aeorobically, but still allow your body time to recover physically and mentally and prevent injuries.

Yea, what the other guy said. Try not to obsess over details, keep it fun, and if you ever feel demotivated or burnt out, take a small break until the motivation comes back. With that kind of 5k, just know if you're not in sub 1:10 half marathon shape now, you're close to it!

Run a half sooner than December. You're probably in 70:00 shape now and are just going to wind up getting hurt or sick sometime in the next couple of months.

GEEZ, if you're making real progress, DON'T STOP IT. Okay, so maybe you peak early- or maybe not. But you'll spend most of your running days eeking improvements when you can. You're surprising yourself with improvemenu now, so go with it. At worst, ONE race isn't worth ruining this growth. And maybe you'll race great.

This past week I totaled 64 miles trying to reach the 70 but missed a workout, going for another 70 this week. I'm still feeling really strong in my runs, this week I would like to incorporate some speed and tempo workouts.

I like the idea of trying to run a half prior to my dec. race, I feel that would give me a better understanding on how to pace myself through the race. Any thoughts on setting up a half marathon course and racing on my own, instead of entering a race? (I don't have that much extra funds to enter a bunch of races at this point).

Also, what kind of tempo runs and interval training should I concentrate on?

Heh, Occupy Gainesville is right on. Go out and find an inexpensive race, maybe not a half marathon but something like a 10 miler, and test yourself.

If you don't want to spend the money, get a group of your guys together and simulate a race on a course that all of you have marked out as legit. Drive it in a car or Garmin or whatever.

As for workouts, mile repeats always work. When I was running sub-70 minute half marathons my threshold runs were something like 3-5 miles at race pace minus 20-25 seconds, just cruising along.

To me, you're already in 70 minute shape, or if not, just several long runs away from a 70 minute half. I wouldn't wait around till December just piling up the mileage. And don't be such a stickler about your mileage either. If your workouts are great and your times are right on, then just throw in a long run every other weekend and forget about it.

Why not run a 10K or 10 miler now and see what it/they show you?

One reason the December race is a priority is that there is prize money for 1-3 place. but if you think I am in good enough shape to run 70 min, I will be careful that I don't overtrain myself to injury. Last night I had a rough double and called my second workout short, my legs are beginning to feel the miles. On top of the running I swim in the morning, so I'm not getting a full 8 hours of rest at the moment.

I think I will try to run a 10k this weekend, I will map something out and see if I can get some friends to pace me through it. I ran 5 mi the other day at a fairly moderate pace and finished that run in 29min so I'm pretty confident I could run a sub 31 min 10k.
