To clarify, I am not an alumni or in anyway connected to the BYU Cross Country/Track Programs. However I have taken 2.5 years off (in large part due to injury and burn out), and knowing generally what Mormon missionaries do on their mission I can confidently say I was less active than just about any one of them. As I have been coming back I have struggled with speed. Back in the day I was a 50.0 400m, 1:53 800m and 4:08 miler. I have struggled to break 56 after 6 months of training coming back, though my 5K is maybe even ahead of were it used to be after my time off, though I didn't race it a lot when I ran in college. I recently was running with some CU Alumni (they shall go nameless) who were very critical of Josh Rohatinsky, Kyle Perry and Miles Batty....however they were very sympathetic to my situation. I understand there are some basic physiological differences between a 18 year old and a 25 year old (standard FR age vs 5th year SR age at BYU) Since the NCAA grants 6th and 7th years of eligibility to athletes who are hurt, how is that any more unfair to give BYU athletes their two years to do what they deem as their religious duty when they aren't even allowed to train for more than 30 minutes a day (and often times can't even do that)? Haters explain... |

This is so stupid to post a thread like this. If you want to make your counter-argument then wait until the argument is made in the first place. You're looking for a fight where there isn't one. |

I don't care what people do with their lives, but hjzetrxt is obviously ignorant of past threads on this message board that have railed on BYU. Its no secret that people don't like the fact that they are older.

I am fine with Tim Tebow doing his Jesus thing, but there is a difference between being hurt and pissing away your life. They shouldn't be rewarded for that. |

Once the body is fully through puberty, what does age do for anybody besides give extra time for train? If somebody isn't training, then there is no advantage. Where's the flaw in my logic? Unless the young college guys want to complain about maturity. In that case, I would respond: Grow up. |

Or look at Oklahoma State's quarterback who was 26 or something like that and had been paid as a professional baseball player. Age aside, it seems wrong to me to let someone be paid as a professional in one sport and then compete as an amateur in another. |

Its funny people always find a flaw when someone else wins. I am in the same boat as the original poster in terms of coming back and have gained a lot of respect for the work Ed Eyestone has done for having to work most of his team through that. Hats off to BYU and best of luck to Batty at nationals. |

The Kenyans and Ethiopians are kicking @ss and taking names at 20. I don't see why y'all ought to be afraid of a few Mormons who took 2 years off to go spread the word. |

One of my buddies ran XC and track at BYU. He said at meets there would be legions of kids running around yelling, "Go mommy!" or, "Go daddy!" |

what about this woman? http://www.thenorthwestern.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2012205270411 ______________________________________________________________ I had different thoughts reading that article. At first I was thinking pretty negative of her for having 2 kids and not being married. Also for her kids being in day care all day while she was in school and running. By the end of the article I kind of admired her for going going to school and trying to better her and her kids life. Good luck to her. |

kinda funny now again in light of Batty get flack for being older than Bayer |
| Wait 2 yrs, then start college |

There's no law that says a HS grad has to go to college right out of high school. The NCAA eligibility clock doesn't start until you attend your first college classes. I used to advise kids to stay home for one or two years after graduation doing nothing but increasing mileage to collegiate/national level, then start college as a 20 year old frosh. If you think about it, those first few years of college are usually a transistion period for track athletes anyway. Why waste one or two years of precious eligibility in development? |

They generally start 'kicking @ss and taking names' at 17 to be fair. The fact that they're probably 25 is irrelevant. |

Before the days of google, I knew nothing about mormons or their connection to BYU (other than for some reason NCAA Champs could not be held on Sundays). All I know is that Henry Marsh, Ed Eyestone, and Doug Padilla where some of the runners that I read about in Runners World (yes, ironic that RW can be attributed to making someone serious about running excellence, but...) that made track & field my sport of choice. Paul Cummings, also! All BYU graduates. I knew nothing at the time about missions etc. Just that they were great athletes. So, their age didn't matter. My 2 cents. Cheers. |

The thing about going on a mission as well is that they cannot train. Many missionaries gain weight because its hard to stay fit. There's no way a missionary could do any real training as they have tight schedules and can never leave their companion. Their companion would have to literally run with them, and they're generally only allotted 30 minutes for working out I believe. Other than being 2 years older, they gain no benefits as any base they had is gone, and they'll essentially be starting over when they get back home. |

This is letsrun. White runners of any age and from any country are just fine on the high school and collegiate levels. Black africans are all over-age, whether they really are or not, and therefore cheaters. Many are also using drugs to enhance their abilities; although we have no evidence of this we all know this to be true. Black Americans are all future criminals, plotting to attack white letsrun posters. |
