Yesterday I lost 3 lbs in 1 hour of running (80 degrees slightly humid). That seems like a ton! I even drank about midway during the run. I was getting light headed towards the end of the run and I am sure I was dehydrated. Is that much water loss normal? And how in the world can I prevent dehydration? I would think I would need about 64oz of water an hour to replace that--not possible especially in a race.

3 lbs in an hour in 80 deg is not off the charts. The science of sport blog had a good post on hydration before Boston. In short, the focus should be drinking to thirst and not a one to one fluid replacement strategy.

If you have trouble on hot runs, make sure you are gettIng enough electrolytes between runs. Chances are that you had trouble after an hour of running because you started out low on electrolytes and fluids. A dietician can help you get more salt, potassium etc into your system before runs without having stomachs troubles.

I will have to be more diligent with pre workout nutrition. I rarely drink enough water during the day--and probably way too much caffeine (tea usually). I was probably going too fast early also. I felt great at first and the last 2 miles were getting really bad. Glad it wasn't a race!

Sounds like that maybe you just are fully acclimated to the heat yet. Pretty common at this early point of the summer. Just keep at it and make a point to stay hydrated but remember that you will lose a lot of water when running.

I really have to be diligent about drinking less coffee in the morning and taking in more water.

When you become acclimated to the heat your sweat more often and you begin sweating earlier. So heat acclimation will lead to more body weight lost to sweat not less.

I am an epic sweater and live in Atlanta...although I can't run distance anymore, I vividly recall the torture of May-September training. Anything over 10 miles and I would literally be squishing sweat out of my shoes and leaving footprints! The only tactic that seemed to work for me to keep from becoming a zombie on anything over an hour is drinking 2-3 gulps of a water/sports drink combo every mile starting at mile 1. I felt like starting early helped stave it off and just doing 2-3 swigs each time helped keep from getting a guy full of water swishing around.

Stop running in the sun!

I don't have this sweat problem like you guys though, so I can run in the middle of the day and be fine.

Just finished a 5-mile progression run. I had one mile for warm up and cool down. I lost 3.6 lbs and feel great. It was about 77* and 77% humidity. You definitely need to drink more water.
