I know there has been discussion about USOC internships in the past, but I had a few questions regarding them. I was offered a sports medicine internship with USOC in Colorado Springs this summer, but now I'm having second thoughts on going because of family issues. I was offered positions at two other internships that I applied for that are slightly closer to home. For those who have been to Colorado Springs and/or actually completed an internship with USOC, it is actually worth it? I don't want to miss out on a once in a lifetime chance to work at the USOC complex but it is really worth me being away for an entire summer? Feedback would be great! |

Are you seriously thinking about turning down an internship at the OTC?! This is a dream opportunity! You'd be crazy to say no because it's a very very hard internship to get. It's an amazing placing, and the people there are fantastic. You go to the dining hall (which btw, the food is ridiculously awesome), and you're surrounded by star athletes. Since this is an Olympic year, there will esp. be a lot of elite athletes there preparing for London. You've got your chance to get your foot in the door here, and it will forever change your life. Don't pass! |

Colo has become a magnet of U.S. distance running with World Champion Jenny and World Junior Champion Lukas. I would definitely hang out in Colo for an internship then look for a job in the hotbed of Olympic, Pro, and college sports, the So Cal area. |

I was a USOC intern at the Training Center in Colorado Springs a number of years ago, and I really enjoyed it. It depends on what your particular placement is though. I had a great intern experience in a great department. However, there were a few interns that I lived with in the dorm though that were glorified copy boys and girls. I guess it was still good for the resume nonetheless for those people. It is a very good networking opportunity as well...much of the networking is in Olympic Sports with NGB's and stuff, but there are some event opportunities and other opportunities that can be parlayed. The Training Center is a pretty neat facility to work and live in for the summer (dorms/food are nothing special though, but fine), and there is a nice bond and esprit de corps built with the other interns that makes for a fun summer experience. As far as being away for the whole summer...yeah, that is tough if you don't live near CO...you are very busy. 4th of July is your only day off not counting weekends and sometimes, you may have to work an event on weekends as well...so yeah, if you don't think you can swing being away all summer, don't do it. |

The food in the dining hall has changed dramatically (for the better) in the past 5 years. Not that many Olympians train at the OTC in COS to be honest. As noted by old intern, a lot depends on the department. Good folks in the sports med dept. Get to know Randy Wilber (the senior sport physiologist, altitude expert, track fan--his ability to remember times and such is amazing, and former college track coach). His office is down in sports med. |
