Chepseba 3'29.90 !!! 5/27/2012 10:52AM Reply | Return to Index | Report Post
hengelo

wild splits of 53.53/1'50.50/2'48.16/3'29.90

gets him in low-3'29s at even pace

the guy was apparently focusing on making kenyan 5k team this year !

if that is true & he gets thru heats, i think you have the favorite for olympic 5k if it is a slow race

Nixon never focused on the 5000m!
Don't forget he won DL last year and ran 3:30!

Nixon looks only at 1500m. His personal splits today were 55.0 (Vickson Polonet, second pacer, was behind the first rabbit in 54.7 and Nixon was immediately behind him), 1:51.2, and remained alone after 1100m.

In Kenyan Trials there are no heats. The event is on 23rd June, and only 15 athletes selected between who has the best limit, and the top runners in National Championships (that are on 14/15/16 of June), can compete.

AK selects runners for African Championships (26.06 / 1.07 in Benin) from National Championships, since the athletes in Olympic Trials cant be ready for going Benin with the competitions starting 3 days later.

How are the splits so different from Carnivore's?
Perhaps not so wild after all. Great run!

he has a 7'37i from last year which is pretty damn good

maybe closer to 7'30 outdoors with 1y of maturity

that's good enough endurance to contend in a slow 5k - like niyongabo in '96

he also started out as a 10k guy ?!
someone had to do it

3 under 3:30 already and the year has just begun. I think we will see some 3:28s this year, and maybe even a 3:27 high if they continue to improve

Am I mistaken, or didn't Chepseba run a 7:31-7:32 3000m earlier this year? I could be wrong.

Ah, thanks. I had meant outdoors, but he doesn't seem to be on that list either; I must have been confused. At any rate, he definitely seems to have the requisite strength, but an actual race would (obviously) be much more telling.
bye bye El G

3:26 is going down, there is a new kind of CERA that is spreaking like wildfire!

Thanks, Renato! Nixon looks very impressive for this year.

Has AK stated what the standard or maximum number of runners will be to progress from the national championships to trials the next week?

Just settle down a bit Ventolin you're thinking of Caleb Ndiku who our dear friend Canova annointed as pointing to 5000 and with the ability to win. Chepseba has been emerging for last few years and is running nothing but 1500.

Has anybody heard of the second finisher, Ayanleh Souleiman? He ran 7:42 in Doha for 3k and now 3:30.31 which is faster than Alan Webb's PR.

Oh dear! It looks like the mid-90's scenario all over again. Soon everyone will be running sub 3:30!!

dumb comment

silas has already gone 3'29 before & asbel looked a 3'30 guy as far back as '08 when he chased a doped up ramzi who looked in possible 3'27-shape all the way to the line - just took him nearly 4y to officially do what he shouda done that year

nixon went 3'30.9 late last year & already 3'31.9 in doha

3'29.9 is not a big move for a guy only aged 21y

Your comment is also dumb. He's not talking about the guys you mentioned. How stupid are you?[/quote]

+1

Correct. A 19 year old who was being eliminated in heats of the African under 20 champs this time last year with pbs of 1:51 & 3:46, is now running 3:30!!??
If that doesn't set off alarm bells (at least) in the minds of track followers, then the sport is pretty much doomed.

Not a fantastic time? When you don't assume the tracks improve year by year (and the shoes) and look at the alltime list, then that is better than the PRs of many great runners. For sure, it was only the second place...
Souleiman is the 25th best performer in history (taking Ramzi and Saidi-Sief out). He has run faster than Webb, Bile and Ovett.
Personally, I believe the equipment is improving a little bit. But still, if this was no fluke, he has improved from 3:34 to 3:30 in one year. It's still early in the season, so there might be more to come.

Actually that's not quite true. His 3:34 was run in December last year, so less than 6 months ago!!
His best time a year ago was 3:46!!
And its not as if he's just taken up the sport a couple of years ago. He was 6th in a heat of the World Youth Championships in 2009 for 3000m, running 8:31.
So his progress in a year is from 3:46 to 3:30!
