I've taken six months off of running due to a bad case of achilles tendinitis in both ankles. After going to the doctor and getting an ultrasound he said it was still there and much the same as it was six months a go (so much for icing). I figured I'd stop being stubborn so I just bought a pair of orthotics. Now I'm getting back into running and wonder what kind of trainers will be the best?? No serious mileage, maybe 30 miles a week, 50 at most. Not interested in anything minimal. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
cheers!

I've had good luck with the Mizuno Wave Rider. The plastic wave thingie seems to limit heel penetration.

I've had AT on and off, but not as bad as you. I found that elevating my heel with a heel cup helps me a lot. I put these under the insole of my shoe:

It's not your shoes. You've got structural issues and imbalances that need to be corrected before you can train 100% again. Simply taking time off doesn't fix any those problems.

ps--I was out for the better part of 9 months in 2010 with an Achilles issue. The culprit ended up being a tight Soleus, the same thing that caused PF five years before that. I've been injury free ever since I finally figured it out. Some days now I even forget which foot was hurt.

look for at least a 15 mm heel - toe drop until your heel starts to feel better
cheers!

Agreed with this. (I also agree with orbitboy that the issues are probably larger, but for the time being you need a big heel, just to take the strain off and give the joint a chance to heal.)

Another thing that helped me was going to a big heel in my work shoes--even something like cowboy boots.

After the pain is gone, you can work on correcting the underlying issues, but until then, I highly recommend going this route. The issue is likely away from the achilles, usually tight hamstrings/inactive glutes.

Sounds like you should have be doing eccentric heel drops for 6 months instead

Yeah, eccentric heel drops barely did anything for me though a lot of people say it works. Cowboy boots help a lot. Putting your ankles in a bucket of ice helps. Wearing a small brace that addresses achilles tendonitis helps too. Sleeping with a boot and ultra sounds also help but the pain is still there... as orbitboy said the structural issue/s need to be addressed. The podiatrist I saw said it was a structural issue and orthotics should correct that issue. Now I am skeptic but this is my last chance and I'm hoping this will work. Summer my mileage was generally around 60 miles a week with one odd week running triples that came out to 100 miles. I worked odd hours as a bike courier so some days I rode close to a week of running mileage. I've made a lot of mistakes over my running career, that I've learned from but last summer I don't regret a single bit. As cross country came the miles were faster and on the roads. I managed to finish the season but with a sad sense that there was going to be no track season. Running in the olympics was a dream of mine that I was close to touching upon (1:49 800 fyi) but I'm content with leaving the competitive world and running for pleasure.. where we all started in the first place.
